    Spinal fusion for herniated T12/L1

Herniated disc between T12/L1 caused severe left sided abdominal pain. Microdiscectomy was dramatically successful, but after 4 1/2 weeks the pain came back, and repeat MRI showed a recurrence. Considering spinal fusion now and would appreciate input. I have confidence in my neuro surgeon, but I'd like to know about actual experiences. I'm 78, always healthy and active until now.

A fusion with complete removal of the disk sounds like it a normal progression of things. If it keeps herniating even though he removed part of it, it seems as if the entire disk needs to come out...and that requires a fusion to replace the disk.

Sounds like a good decision to me although all of mine are cervical or lumbar although I do have a bunch of herniated disks in the thoracic too but none are ready for surgery....yet.

Thanks....that's my thinking too. I really don't want this to happen again, as the pain is very severe.
