Unhappy What is going on with my neck!??

I've been having terrible stiffness and pain in my neck (the back and sides) for about 3-4 months now. I can't turn it left or right without pain or discomfort or hardly at all. I wake up in the mornings with the worst stiffness in the neck and pain as well. It gets better just when I'm pretty much up for a minute. I got an MRI a few months also and the doc said I have two small bulging discs that didn't seem that bad. I went to another orth doc to get a second opinion. The doc sent me to a rhumatologist to see if I have arthritis, but the tests came back normal for that and also he tested me for lupus which also came back negative as well. Also I was tested for any nuorological problem in the office by doing things like walk on my tip toes in a line etc... which also was negative.

The worst is trying to sleep at night because as soon as I lay down my neck starts to feel uncomfortable being in a position for a few minutes like it's tired and then after a few minutes when I get up my neck feels really stiff and there is horrible pain. I feel like I'm not in a deep sleep that long at night because I'm moving around trying to get my neck comfortable. After being up for a minute I feel some relief. I have tried a million types of pillows and sleeping positions. I found the most tolerable position ,but I want to know what the heck is going on with my neck. I'm getting another MRI done in a few weeks because I asked the rhumatologist for one. I'm going to take it back to my ortho doc to look and see if anything has changed since the last. The strange thing is my neck got much worse soon after the last MRI in December. I have also gone to Physical Therapy and that has not helped at all in fact it got much worse for a while and then I stopped it because it wasn't helping. She was making me do neck tucks telling me I needed to strengthen my front neck muscles. Is there anything else I should get tested for? I'm 37 and healthy otherwise. How an I go from being normal to this much pain? Please let me know if I should see a different type of doctor or any tests I should ask for? It's very depressing. I was a healthy normal person before December and now this crap.

    Dear Jazzmine,
What you are describing is exactly how my first "flare up" felt.
It came on in 2007 and after X-rays and MRI, I was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis of my cervical spine (neck) and 2 bulging discs, also in my neck. The bone spurs/arthritis comes from the discs being damaged.

In my experience, the disc pain is deep and intense and not so wide spread. The flare up, arthritis pain is achy, burning, alot of stiffness and spreads from the back of my neck to the sides. The stiffness makes my muscles go into spasm, and mornings and nights are the worst, before you get going. Your head feels heavy and your muscles around the neck are sore. This is how it feels for me.
My 2 bulging discs were both mild in nature, but the arthritis was still very painful.

See if you can get in touch with a spine specialist, and hopefully they can get you into a pain management clinic. There is alot of things you can get help with in order to improve from your pain.

Injections, traction, anti inflammatories, muscle relaxers, heat and ice theraphy, tens unit etc, physical theraphy focusing on spine disorders. Pain management clinics do this all day and every day, and they are professionals at dealing with back and neck conditions.
If they cannot help you, they will refer you further.

Hope you get the help you need, let me know how it goes.

    /Vic

Re: What the hell is going on with my neck!??

Thanks for your response, but how can I go from having no problems to all this pain? I'm also only 37 years old. I can't imagine going through life with this. Why is it that I can't lay down? If I want to just relax and lay down to watch tv, even sitting upright a little and leaning back into pillows, my neck feels painful and stiff. I can't even sleep at night and get comfortable. The best I feel is when I'm upright during the day...standing, walking, sitting. I dread laying down to sleep because of my neck. I usually fall asleep around midnight and then wake up and flip around starting at 2 or 3 in the morning and I'm tossing and turning till 7a.m. not really asleep because of the aches.

During the day is more tolerable, but I still feel the stiffness if I have to move my neck left or right. Up or down. I also hate taking medication...I like to know what the cause of something is rather than medicate a problem. I don't know if I should just take another MRI to see the difference between the last MRI and now. The last MRI I took in December...my neck problems were no where near the amount of pain and discomfort I have now. It's a lot worse...so I feel like something is very wrong. I am seeing a spine specialist already and he just said to go to Physical Therapy. I tried that and it was hell. I don't think she knew what she was doing because I was in so much more pain for weeks after I stopped going.

Re: What the hell is going on with my neck!??

I am so sorry for your pain.
If you are already seeing a spine specialist - thats great! If you feel what they give you doesnt really help or explain, you might have to consider a second opinion, other options.
I started out where u were and tried everything they threw at me, for 5 years. Some of the treatment I got was great, but it only lasted a month or two. These 5 years has tought me a lot about my condition, how I can live and how I cannot. I am now up for a 2 level fusion, since its my last chance at getting better and gaining my life back.
If you dont feel like you are getting better and getting any answers as to whats going on, keep pushing! You deserve to know whats going on and to feel better.
    Best of luck,
    Vic.

    Another thing,
Your age has little do with it. Im 39, and doctors kept telling me, you are to young to have this. I still did. Sure, age is a factor in spinal disease, but you can be young and have severe spinal problems.
Good luck now, finding answers and treatment.

Re: What the hell is going on with my neck!??

I have the same problem. Reading your post here made me feel that I am not alone.
My doctor never met anyone who cannot rest their neck on the pillow cause of pain.
He doesn't know what to do with me. When I turn my neck to the left and right it hurts.
I CANNOT rest my neck on the pillow cause it hurts so badly. So if you cannot rest your neck on the pillow - how can you sleep?

    Physical therapy did nothing.

I don't think there is anything to do with that. I have that thing for 6 years already and hardly sleep. Didn't had any deep sleep for 6 years.

Have you been in a car accident? a whiplash?

Meanwhile you can try clonazepam - it works great for neck pain and allow you rest your neck on the pillow but eventually it will stop working cause the body gets used to it.
    Lyrica didn't help me.
    I am considering cymbalta.

NOthing but medications helps BELIEVE ME. It is disaster not to be able to REST YOUR NECK ON THE PILLOW.

My EXPERIENCE of living like that for 6 years. and look if they don't find a solution for it it can lasts a lifetime.

    Same here...
the most miserable time of my day is when I try and lay down on my pillow to sleep. I usually end up getting up and taking pain meds, anxiety meds, motrin (not all at once) just what ever I can to knock myself out. I don't think I've had a good nights sleep in 15 years.

Best wishes to you. I sure do hope you find some answers. ~hugs, kenzi.

Re: What the hell is going on with my neck!??

What meds are you taking before you go to sleep? please tell me.

Anybody here had a whiplash and then later on could not sleep cause could not rest his/neck on the pillow? - Please tell me?
any other trauma to your neck?
I was a passenger in a car and that's how it happened.

Not enough I am in constant pain Rheumatologist told me I have fibromyalgia but without tender points. I always thought you need tender points in order to be diagnosed.

all my muscles/joints hurt me all over my body - But guess what? the real ordeal is the NECK. Cause with sll this chronic pain you want to rest and sleep.

usually two tylenol #3, or an ativan and an 800mg motrin together. the motrin usually helps me during the day, but at night I need more. you might also try and flatter pillow so your neck isn't bent. I've never had any luck with neurontin, cymbalta, lyrica, vicodin or anything like that. hope this helps.

Thanks a lot. I have never tried ativan. I have tried clonazepam. Which helped but stopped working.

I wish there was a doctor who could cure me of this neck pain.

ativan is an anxiety med, not a pain med, but it makes me relaxed and very drowsy. flexeril never worked for me either. ok, hope you get some relief! Have a great Easter!

Again, that sounds so much like me. I feel so so sorry for you. Nobody can understands you better than me. This pain in the neck won't let you sleep more than 2-3 hours and then you wake up. I know all about it.
I cannot even find a doctor who is willing to listen to me. They all look at me like I am crazy. Neck is a serious business, doctors don't understands much about it.
I also have 2 bulging disks but I have been in a car accident.
I am so so sorry for you. I wish you were able to rest your neck on the pillow at night. I so miss the days I were able to sleep normally.

Let me know how you are doing.

Re: What the hell is going on with my neck!??

So sorry for your trouble. I can empathize with your situation very well. Do a search on cervicogenic headaches and compare with your symptoms. That is a not a diagnosis per se but rather a term that describes a cluster of symptoms that can be caused by a number of things. Also ask your physician about cervical blocks and if they are appropriate for your specific case. Also ask about a topical gel that starts with a "V". I don't think I am allowed to mention specific medications on this site so ask them about it. It has both anti-inflammatory and nerve-numbing properties. I don't think I'd be sane today without it as my headaches from cervical problems are horrible. If your physician does not do block injections, ask if it is appropriate for a referral to a pain specialist. I wish you much luck & blessings.

Re: What the hell is going on with my neck!??

    Hi,
I'm sorry to hear that you're having terrible pain. You sound a lot like me when I was younger. My pain started in my mid 20's. The x-rays showed at the time that my discs were thinning out between my vertebrae. The doc at the time put me in a soft collar & I slept with a rolled up towel under my pillow to ease the pain & give support. I started going to a chiropractor not for adjustments, but for stimulation therapy & massage. This greatly helped & I was able to have better mobility. This made things tolerable until about 2 years ago (I am now 54). Then I was told that I had developed degenerative disc disease & stenosis. Long story short, I had C3-T2 surgery 6 months ago. When I told my NS my story, he said that sometimes neck issues are genetic ( both my mother & brother have bad necks). So I learned that sometimes injury to the neck doesn't have to occur for this condition to take shape. My advice is to obtain good baseline data (MRIs, x-rays) on your neck and to continue to follow up with a good NS or orthopedic doc specializing on the cervical spine. They will be able to judge the changes that are occurring within your cervical area and recommend follow up treatment. I highly recommend massage - it really helped me to loosen up my muscles. Good luck!
