Herniated Disc and Ambien

About 2 and a half years ago I herniated a cervical disc in my neck. I couldn't sleep at all and asked my doctor for help. He prescribed Ambien 5 mg. I took one each night until my ACDF surgery 6 months later. Amazingly enough my sleep issues continued after the surgery and pain in my neck and shoulder blades also returned. My doctor raised the Ambien to 10 mgs.

I started having panic attacks, couldn't go to the mall, run errands...not a thing. It was constant pain during waking hours. I have a very busy life with 4 kids so this wasn't ideal. A year and a half later a chronic pain specialist prescribed Nucynta 50 3x a day.

Then I began to have dental issues. My dentist says "Get off Ambien." Then I research it. Sure enough there's a lot of information on stress, anxiety, dry mouth, etc. Also, it becomes semi-ineffective.

I am off Ambien but will wait to see if my sleep cycle returns. Then, hope to see if it helps pain in neck and shoulders to subside. Not sure but considering the idea that Ambien contributes to problems if taken for a long period of time.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Ambien and all hypnotic type drugs don't just become semi-ineffective with such regular longterm use, they become counter effective and dangerous. They keep you from good sleep. You are lucky you were able to come off it without more major events and difficulties. It can take months for a normal sleep cycle to return. Natural sleep supplements might help. But since you have now researched it you know all this. Glad your dentist got you headed back in the right direction.
