    How to avoid post-myelogram headache?

Confused about what I should do to avoid the headache. Is there nausea too?
I am highly susceptible to causes of nausea.

How do I lie flat and then drink the 8 glasses of water after the procedure? How long can I get up to go the bathroom?

To me this sounds impossible. Help anyone?

Someone wrote to 'be careful a few days afterwards.' What does this mean?

If you have ever had a "Lumbar Puncture" it is basically the same process. As in you can get the headache & such afterwards. Just read up on that procedure & you will do fine. I have had both done & didn't really have any problems. Also you might want to check up on drinking a soft drink with caffeine in it as well. I do know those help to.
As far as lying down for a few days I was told just for the day... I believe 8 hours or so. I do know that after I had my Myelogram I went to a recovery area for up to 6 hours so that did take most of the time.

Best of luck on your procedure & check back in when you can.

Not sure you can really avoid it. I followed all instructions and still got it.

Re: How to avoid post-myelogram headache?

I called the doc that performed the procedure not long after the headache started. I had read enough people's accounts of how severe it can become and knew I didn't want to go through that. Some had said it is the most horrible headache that you can imagine and some said they could barely walk into the ER because the pain was so intense. It is worse when standing and gets better while lying down.

Anyway....my doc made arrangements for me to come to the hospital early the next morning and have the blood patch. Thankfully the relief is immediate. The headache is caused from spinal fluid leaking out....sometimes the puncture site doesn't close up.

I think maybe I got it because they discharged me about 2 hrs after the procedure. I have read where some people are kept for about 6 hrs and that is a good thing as it gives you more time for the sealing to take place before you get up and walk around. Just ask your doc all the questions you need to be prepared. Follow the instructions and hopefully you will avoid the dreaded headache. Best of luck!!

I asked the radiology nurse about the six hour stay also.
She said "no, we don't keep anybody longer than two hours.
    They just don't need it."

So I guess I may be in for it!

Thanks so much for answering. It is what it is.

Re: How to avoid post-myelogram headache?

I just had my first myelogram last week. I was really nervous about the headache after. I laid flat for about 4 hours in recovery. Then, in the car on the ride home, I reclined. Then I just went home and laid in a recliner for the rest of the night, only getting up to go use the restroom (after drinking all the water as recommended). I only had a slight headache in the evening.
