Lightbulb Can myelogram be done at surgery time under anesthesia?

If I have to have a cervical fusion I'm not as scared of it as I am the myelogram prior to it. I had problems during the one I had 4 years ago, and swore I'd never have one again!

My sister had a fusion and also had the same fear, and her neurosurgeon (not my dr.)did an MRI to confirm her need for surgery, but waited to do the myelogram until she was under anesthesia at the time of surgery. THIS SOUNDS GREAT TO ME!

Have any of you heard of this? Please tell me it's possible! (And before you ask, I can't use her dr. becuase I my insurance doesn't cover his attending hospital.)

I would think that it would be really difficult to do a myelogram at the time of surgery because of the time involed and the two different areas of the hospital that are involved. They use a cat scan to get results. Usually this is located in the radiology department. I guess it may be possible for large hospitals to have a CT scan in surgery. I don't know. Maybe a surgery nurse will pop in with more info. Most neuro surgeons aren't sensitive enough to care about their patients fears or concerns. Sorry to be so negative but i just had the myelogram from hell three weeks ago and i'm still trying to get the results from it. It seems these docs only care about themselves. I am a nurse. In my opinion neuro docs are the worst docs i've ever met.

I was lucky in that the facility that performed my mylegram was incredibly professional and the experience wasn't that bad for me, but I can see how it could be pretty awful in the wrong hands. The only negative is that they know that they're good and didn't accept any insurance so I had to go out of pocket.

In my case the test was done prior to surgery as the results of the exam were necessary for my surgeon to finalize in his mind the procedures he would eventually recommend. In other words, he wanted all of the facts in front of him before he finalized his strategy. We already knew I was going to have surgery and the mylegram was to determine if a second procedure would also be required.

I would ask your doc where he personally would go if he needed this test.

Good luck!!!
