Question chest pains from C5/6 disc -anyone?

    Hi everyone,
I have a bad disc at c5/6 and often get sharp pains(even difficult to breath deeply) in the chest under the arm pit on the left side. I wondered if anyone elde has these symptoms with cervical problems. I get it with driving or sitting or neck movements. Any thoughts on this?

Also disc bulges c3/4 and 6/7. Numerous facet and nerve blocks along with extensive conservative treatment prior to surgery.

I have this when I cough, laugh or sneeze only on my left side. I'll be seeing a neurologist 4/22. Hopefully, he can help me shed some light on all of my crossed wires.
    01/27/03 Cervical MRI:

C3-C6 straightening of normal cervical curvature.
C2-T1 mild central spondylosis without significant stenosis.
C3-C4 broad-based spondylosis and bulging with mild to moderate flattening of the anterior epidural space.
C4-C5 broad-based spondylosis and bulging eccentric to the left with mild to moderate compression upon the anterior epidural space.
C5-C6 spondylosis with a broad-based protrusion with moderate compression of the anterior epidural space.
C6-C7 mild central spondylosis and a small midline protrusion with minimal flattening of the anterior epidural space.

    03/28/03 Myelogram/CT.

    bulging disc L4-L5, DDD.

I was having chest pains a few weeks ago and went to my GP. She hooked me up to an EKG and it was normal. She thought it was due to my herniations (C5-6, C6-7), after seeing my neurologist, he disagreed. Who knows? I think until he's gone through it, he can't know everything. I have so many strange symptoms that I hope will clear up after I have surgery. I hope you will get some answers.

    Symptoms dating back to 1986?
    Rear-ended 1999
    Disc herniations C5-6 & C6-7
    DDD diagnosed 2002
    Surgery scheduled for 6-25-03

Chest pain definitely from the C5-6 area. I have horrendous chest pain, and was told that the nerve compression was the reason.

Also went through the EKG's etc, but the MRI told the tale.

    God bless,

    C4-5 noncompressive disc displacement
    C5-6 compressive disc displacement
C6-7 broad based disc protrusion encroaching on the anterioposterior aspect of the spinal canal.
    God bless,

Mel, I am a C5-6. I'm not a specialist, so take my advice with a grain of salt. I sometimes get a cramp in my neck at the level of injury. It sometimes produces slight chest pains among other discomforts. My theory is that the cervicals are compressing a nerve in someway. I find if I move my head slowly in a circular motion slowly, in both directions, excercising the range of motion in my neck in my neck. I will hear or feel a slight cracking in my neck after the first or second time. This usually relieves my discomfort.

The muscles pull funny all down the sides and back of your neck... you do it automatically to adjust position to avoid pain. This makes you pull on other muscles, and they in turn whack out. Your whole collarbone, chest, back, neck and shoulder area can be affected.

In PT, they had me do slow stretching side to side, ear to shoulder, chin to chest and chin up. I don't think I would do the whole rotation thing tho,,, and depending if you have cord trouble, the chin to chest may be a bad move to.

For relief tho...... a rice bag (sock full of raw rice) heated in the microwave for up to 45 seconds, and draped over your affected shoulder area will relax the muscles that cross the chest, throat, etc.

If it stays bad, ask the dr. for some muscle relaxers.

    Good luck.

    Thanks everyone,
    For your responses.
Thanks Niki for the exercise suggestions and I do agree with the whole muscle pulling thing.
I also have the disc compression near the nerve so I think that initially causes those pains. How are you?

I may try a nerve block on the left c5/6 since the right one helped that.

I also get that arm pain with that side so guess it's part of the whole gammit.
Does anyone know of any meds that help besides cortosone?
