    Straight Spine

I am a 36 year old mother. I have had chronic to the point of debilitating back pain for years. With shift work, ball games and music lessons there rarely is time for me to see a DR. Finally, I made the time. I have been given muscle relaxers to mitigate pain. According to the rules of my job, I am by Law not allowed to work Air traffic anywhere from 48-96 hours after a single dose. I took a dose, work not happy, flexeril finally allowed for sleep but did nothing for pain. So, I chose a sports medicine DR, had an X-ray today. My spine is very straight. Prescribed more muscle relaxers and after visit today and being turned every which way I decided to take one. I feel sleepy but still in pain. I decided to google Straight Spine etc... There is next to nothing about this condition I can find. Is this an unknown or rarely discussed problem? I feel like I am crazy and maybe my pain is not that great in the big scheme of doctoring. Like I said earlier, I rarely have time for me but the more I do around house and sitting in traffic the.... Pain is painful and I just want a real answer that May have a solution.

    Re: Straight Spine

Hi There. It’s one of those frustrating problems that can in fact be very painful. You did not describe there your spine is in fact straight. I can only talk about the neck - Cervical Straight spine or straightening of the cervical lordosis.

I can only tell you from my experience of what I have researched and have been told. There are actually multiple reasons of the straightening of the cervical spine. Commonly it's posture, as in the more forward position the head is the more pressure is places on your spine to hold your head. A doctor put it like this. If you hold a bowling ball close to your chest its quite easy - but the further away from the body you hold it the more pressure you feel and the harder your muscles have to work. This pressure can straighten the spine. It’s not necessarily the spine that hurts, but rather the major muscles are asked to hold your head up and the minor muscles then need to take the place of the majors. Muscles are pulled and over time it can become a chronic issue. Physical therapy plus numerous exercises found on the internet can help.

But, I implore you to find out “why” first. I was treated with muscle relaxers for two year before any doctor would take me seriously. I have moderate stenosis and in order to take a little bit more pressure off of my spinal cord, my head protrudes (similar symptoms above, plus other fun stuff).

If it's just a posture related disorder, then over time and with the right conditioning you should get better. I would recommend seeing a spine specialist and someone who deals with pain management.

I know that prob doesn’t help - maybe specifically tell me what your symptoms are. This kind of pain becomes chronic, scar tissue can form, muscles spasm - it's painful. Also consider looking into medical massages or Rolfing.

Again - the underlying issue would need to be discovered before a treatment plan can be put in place.

If nothing more, I hope this message lets you know you're not alone.
