    chiari, adderall, testosterone therapy

Anyone notice adderall or testosterone injections aggrevate chiari symptons? I am recently diagnosed, and until i can afford surgery, trying to "manage" the debilitating episodes of dizziness, numbness, trouble swallowing, headache, nausea, vomitting, etc. Maybe it's not possible to directly affect this, but i know ice pack to the neck works almost everytime. Have walked around for a week straight switching packs every hour. Used frozen cocktails in a bag, until i got frostbite on my neck. Turned black, hurt and peeled like a sunburn, fyi.

Hi bonzo, I am so sorry that you are having such a hard time with so many symptoms! Welcome to healthboards! I have adhesive arachnoiditis in lumbar & some of the symptoms are the same so i can understand & ive noticed these two diagnoses mentioned together when doing some research & the spinal cord being squeezed, no or low spinal fluid, possible tethering, syringomyelia are possible with both. I have numbness in feet which causes balance problems, mostly pain, pain & more pain & it is very hard to find a specialist. Is the surgeon that you are seeing a neurosurgeon who is a specialist in chiari malformations? Wow, frostbite? Thats terrible & i hope the skin is healing now! I understand that the severe pain made you want the ice packs as cold as possible but be careful to protect the skin with covering ice with a paper towel or handkerchief works well & so do the gel filled ice packs. There is a board here called Brain & nervous system disorders & i have seen chiari malformations mentioned there & you may get more replies from others that have gone through the same condition. Have you asked your dr if a pain management referral would be helpful until you have surgery? Im sorry i dont know about the effects of adderal or testosterone on chiari, may be a good question for the dr. God bless you!

    Re: chiari, adderall, testosterone therapy

Maybe this will help. My daughter was on Adderall 10 years ago, back when we did not know about her Chiari. Her joints began to ache. I took her to see MULTIPLE doctors, including Rheumatoid Specialists who all stated that the Adderall had nothing to do with it. THEY WERE WRONG!! Adderall causes dry mouth so therefore Adderall will most likely affect the flow of CSF, causing aches and pains, especially in joints. If you have Chiari, the last thing you want to do is take something that causes dry mouth or dehydration. You can try drinking more water or just stop taking the Adderall for a few days and see if that helps.
