    Agony Lower Back Pain

Had back prob since the 90's, when it first went then it was agony for months, saw docs, specialists, hosps etc, I did swimming, yoga and walking to help and lost weight, over time it eased although the weakness will always be there. this happened in my 30's, all my health problems seemed to happen when I hit my 30's.

Now I am 46 and a few days ago my back went again, omg the agony, had to go to emergency I could not hardly move, they rarely send out docs now and was a weekend so had to struggle to hospital, waited over an hour for a 5min session with the doctor. She put me on pain killers and said I have a trapped pinched nerve. the pain goes down legs so like sciatica to. going see own gp today.

I am doing gentle exercise to help, but I am so limited again now, I can only cook certain things, I cant go out as I had plan to over bank holiday, as when I get up from sit position I am crumbled over with pain until I can straight up, even having to use walk stick.

My quality of life right now is nill. I am independent and had so many plans but I had to cancel all of them, have a sick dad a few miles away in care home I cant go and see, I have no car and cant manage it on trains and buses, in to much pain, I can only manage short walk around the block.

The pain is there all the time, checked on net and found it can take no less then 5 weeks before the pain will ease or even longer.

I am trying meditation to help calm my stress down.

With the pain not only physical but emotional as well you have to cope. I used to get depression, I dont want all that back again. Plus I feel confined now as well.

Its my lower back 2nd disc trapped nerve.

Is anyone else going through this? how are you coping?

Is it the second lumbar disc from the bottom...L4-L5? Otherwise, if it is L2-L3 it shouldn't be causing pain down the back of your leg.

What specifically are your symptoms? Do you have any numbness or tingling? What makes the pain symptoms better or worse?

thanks for info, didnt know the disc numbers, docs dont tell me that, been told trapped nerve by hosp doc. years ago was told its degeneration disease of spine 2nd disk from bottom, the vertabrae think it called is coming out. or thinning, like arthritus of which have in knees as well.

The pain is across my lower back but mainly pressed into one side of my lower back into the nerve, I have aching pains down my legs and tiredness from fighting the pain, when I get up from sit position I am stuck for a few seconds. very stiff and painful. I used to get shooting pain down one side of leg but now its not shooting its like achy pain down both. I feel like I have been hit across my back with an iron rod. the pressure is more to the right, but it then sends pain right across my back. I cant bend down much and cant pick up anything heavy. I some times bend forward with the pain. I feel it hit my pressure points as well. Its like a bad pain in my back with with a dull ache tiredness pain in my legs. I feel as if I have been on a 10 mile run and never did it before. Back is stiff as well.

Have used hot water bottle, tablets for it, nothing really eases it. Awaiting hospital for physio.

Years ago when it first went I had pins and needles down my legs and throbbing foot one side as well and sciatica pains. I used to limp with it. Over time it eased, but now its returned, but pain different as to before, as say, its more achy tiredness now in legs, but still feel it hit my pressure points though. the pain in back is like, a banging pain. pounding really.

I was told ages ago its the 2nd disk from the bottom.

What also gets me down is a few weeks ago I was also diagnosed with Helicobacter Pylori and was having stomach pains. was put antibiotics for that and it hadnt gone fully and now I have my back agony returned again on top.

    LW-

For some reason, I get the feeling you're in the UK. If you were in the states, I would definitely hope you could get a lumbar MRI.

Without an MRI (or EMG) to correctly determine which nerve is trapped, I'm not sure what to tell you.

Back in 1998, I had a herniated disc at L3/L4, which impeded my ability to walk. With the expelled disc material rubbing the nerve, the pain was so severe that 50 feet was my walking distance before I had to sit down. Surgery in 2000 corrected it.

For now, you might consider work with a water therapist to help build your lumbar strength. The water makes you feel lighter by providing buoyancy.

Consider deep tissue massage to see if that could help.

I wish you the best in diagnosing your issue and getting it resolved.

I don't know what to suggest, but I do hope that your pain will subside soon. I know it can be difficult not being able to do what you would like when you're in pain, but you will be able to get through this I'm sure. Positive vibes to you

    Re: Agony Lower Back Pain

If you have a herniated disc and you have been dealing with it for 15 yrs. I think it's time to get a good idea of what is wrong and then surgically fix it. I herniated L5/S1 28 yrs. ago and know what that pain is like. We tried everything from injections to therapy and it worked for a short time. Finally had a Laminectomy done and they found a piece of the disc imbedded in the nerve. This did not show up on an MRI. The relief was immediate and I made it 22 yrs. before I developed more low back problems. Fast forward to 2010 I had L1-L5 discectomies, 2011 T7-T12 discectomy,2012 C3-4/C4-5 fusion, right total hip replacement. 2014 C5-6/C6-7 fusion in 2 weeks.
So as you can see I've been around the block a few times and can tell you the only thing that works for me is surgery. Because of insurance we have had to try everything before any surgery would be approved and I have been lucky that each surgery has relieved a lot of my pain. I am not pain free, but I can deal with what I have. Bottom line is get a good surgeon you trust and when nothing else works, have the surgery done, you won't regret it! Good Luck to you!
