    Smile Can Chiropractors fix Spondylothesis

Hello everyone. I have not posted here in a long time because I've been consumed with multiple medical issues. Eleven years ago, Mild Spondylolisthesis was seen on my MRI. Since then, it has progressed to grade level 2. I've had several surgeries over the years and am now facing the biggest challenge of my life - "fusion surgery to stabilize my spine!" I've seen 4 neurosurgeons in California, and all share the same opinion on the Spondylolisthesis and how it should be corrected. The last two said they aren't sure if it's going to get rid of all my back pain or not. My primary care doctor doesn't think I should have back surgery. "But she doesn't live with agonizing spine pain 24/7 and she's not a specialist! I told her the only thing I haven't tried is Chiropractic treatment b/c of a previous bad experience. I'm willing to see one again for one last opinion before making a decision to have fusion surgery. As for conservative treatment, I've tried: P. Therapy, joining a gym for 2 years, heat, many many injections, lots of different medications. All have failed or give very temporary relief. I've also developed a debilitating neurogenic bladder condition, sciatica, chronic osteoarthritis in knees, hips, neck/back, shoulders and "thumbs!" The longer I wait to decide on surgery, the more I risk permanent nerve damage and a paralyzed bladder. I'm curious to hear if seeing a chiropractor is worth all the time & money. I have to make a decision before the holidays start. Your comments will be GREATLY appreciated!

    Re: Can Chiropractors fix Spondylothesis

I would certainly never see a chiropractor for Spondylolisthesis in my cervical spine. There is too much damage they could do with the manipulations to an already unstable spine. I doubt, if I personally, would use one for any other areas of instability either. There is just too much that can go wrong.

You mention you tried PT. A good PT would have given you exercises to help strengthen the muscles to try to stabilize your spine as much as possible. They also would have done safe massage, perhaps gentle traction if safe to help alleviate the compression to your spinal cord or nerve roots that is causing your issues. If that didn't work, I seriously doubt you'll get any benefit from chiropractic and you will incur risk.

But don't listen to me, I'm not a Dr, ask any of the 4 neurosurgeons you've seen. I'd be willing to bet they say stay away from chiropractors.

One thing I would recommend is to get the opinion of a fellowship trained orthopedic spine specialist (not just a general orthopedic surgeon). They undergo special training in spine surgery and evaluation. In my experience, they tend to have a more conservative take on these situations, so if they suggest surgery I would do it as quickly as possible. One other thing to consider... if the neurosurgeons you've seen are not spine specialists (only see spine patients and have fellowship training), I would think twice about having them do the surgery...

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

    Re: Can Chiropractors fix Spondylothesis

Is the spondylolisthesis in the lumbar or cervical area?

A reputable chiropractor would not treat you upon realizing you are dealing with a spondylolisthesis. It is beyond the scope of chiropractic treatment.

I second the suggestion to see an orthopedic spine surgeon for a consultation. Their training is similar to that of the neurosurgeon but they often approach things slightly differently.
