swallowing, lump in throat after acdf

6 months since level 2,5-6-7 fusion with plates and cages. Swallowing liquids and Sylvia sometime feels like I can't breathe, bending over constructs my throat and when I walk I feel everything in my throat. Worst feeling ever, scared to do anything out side the house, going to an ent to see what the problem is. My surgeon sez he never heard of these issues. Yet see,s me every 5 weeks to see if it's better. I also feel like I have something tied around the front of my neck.ANYONE have any answers???

I obviously don't know if your issues are related to your surgery or not, but it is certainly possible. About 29% of people have some (normally transient) difficulty swallowing post ACDF (this is one of the main reasons I'm putting it off as long as I can). Normally these issues resolve sooner than 6 months so I would wonder if there is something going on. Possible mechanisms for the swallowing problems related to surgery if such is the case, would include : nerve damage from instruments/trauma etc while performing the surgery and slippage of hardware pressing on the esophagus. Have you had any imaging follow-up after your surgery?

I would definitely make sure the ENT you go to knows you have had this surgery and if you haven't had follow up imaging I would bring that up to the ENT as well. If you aren't getting results from that process or your current surgeon you should consider a second opinion. The tricky part about that is that many spine specialists don't want to deal with other Drs' surgery. In that case, getting into a university spine center or some other place that is used to referrals after surgery may be the way to go.

Good luck and let us know how it goes...
