Serzone and Effexor combo - Maci

    Hi Maci,
You mentioned being on a combination of Serzone and Effexor and that it worked well for you. I'm on Serzone (300 mg. once/day) and it's either not working at all - or not enough. My doc. wants to add Effexor and I got scared off by all of the negative posts about withdrawal. Are you still on the Effexor? I just wondered if you've been to the point of trying to get off and what your experience was. I realize that I am reading the horror stories and that those who had minimal withdrawal would not be nearly as likely to post. What do you think? I'd appreciate your input. Melody

    Hi Melody!
I was on the Serzone/Effexor combo for almost two years. It worked great for my anxiety and depression with minimal, if any, side effects. I have now been off both for over a month, actually almost two. I had very few withdrawal symptoms coming off the Effexor. I am not sure at this point whether it was due to the extremely slow taper(over a month) or the combination of Serzone. I ended the Serzone a week or so after the Effexor. Do you take the Serzone in the morning or at night? It made me really tired so I took it at night. Effexor seemed to make me more energetic so I took that in the morning. Everyone is different but this worked great for me. I have read many of the horror stories regarding Effexor withdrawal and have responded to a few. I agree with you that the people who have had success getting off Effexor would be less likely to post. I have heard far more horror stories than positive ones. In my opinion, I think you should give the combination a try. I don't know that Serzone by itself did much for me either besides make me sleep well, but when my doc added the Effexor I could really tell the difference! I wanted to see if after four years on medication I could go without, but if I feel myself slipping, I will go right back to Effexor/Serzone. Let me know if you have anymore questions. Good luck and keep me posted on how it is working for you if you decide to give it a shot.

    Maci
Thanks for your reply. I take my Serzone at night also. I'll let you know what I decide about the Effexor. It will probably be a week or so before I make a decision. I am leaning towards giving it a chance. Since I know the dangers, maybe I can plan my eventual withdrawal carefully - including a very slow tapering off, taking Benadryl, and maybe having a week of time off work approved when I go from 37.5 to nothing. Thanks again. Nice to meet you. I spend most of my board time on the depression board, but I'll post here and let you know what I decide. <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif"> Melody
