    Was this a stroke?

My Dad is 81 and lives alone, and he told me a couple days ago that he was putting dishes away in a cabinet when he suddenly couldn't use his hands. He said they just lost all strength to where he couldn't move them at all, and his arms up to his elbows were very weak. He ended up lying down on his bed for about 10 minutes before things returned to normal.

Both of us thought maybe it was a mini-stroke. But we both thought that a stroke affected just one side of the body. But could it still be a stroke if it affected both hands at the same time?

It's possible it was a positional issue and nerve impingement...but the very best thing is to take him to the doctor asap, and hopefully he will be tested to see if it was a stroke or not.

    Please keep us updated.

I would if it were up to me, but he doesn't want to go to the doctor because he doesn't want to be put through more "unnecessary" tests. He's had some bad experiences with doctors. He's gone to the hospital because he was concerned about some issue, and then they end up keeping him there for several days for "observation" and then send him home without actually doing anything.
As for being a positional issue, he said he was standing in the kitchen and putting dishes in the cabinet.

Hope it's a one-off. If it isn't...encourage him to go to the doctor or urgent care or ER depending on how he's feeling.
