9yr old sick with H1N1 symptoms, BUT got vaccine 18 days ago

My 9 yr. old woke up with flu symptoms this morning. Cough, sore throat and 100.5 fever. My 14yr. old and husband both had the flu about 15 days ago.
18 days ago my 9yr. old received the H1N1 vaccine and had the seasonal flu vaccine early September.

My question likely is it that this is the H1N1 flu?
And should he have a milder case since he already has some antibodies in his system from the vaccine?

My 14 yr. old was sick for about 5 days (and is still coughing)
My husband was sick for about 3 days (and is still coughing)

Also have a 3yr. old at home and am worried if he gets sick.

Thanks everyone....

Hi Laurie,

Very difficult to say whether this is H1N1 or not. If it IS indeed the flu then it is most likely H1N1 as this is what is circulating right now. Keep in mind that in 10% of cases, the vaccine is ineffective so getting the flu is not out of the question even with the vaccine. I would imagine that in this case, the symptoms would be much milder and the illness much shorter than without the vaccine. 18 days is about the time needed to develop the necessary antibodies.

This could also be a very bad cold which can sometimes go with a fever as well. The vaccine will obviously not protect him from that. I guess all you can really do at this point is to keep your 9 year old at home to recover for a few days and keep him away from your 3 year old as much as possible. Whether it be a bad cold or the flu, if he has a fever, the remedy is the same: fluids to prevent dehydration and lots of rest.

Hang in there and I hope the illness is brief (which it probably will be).

A person may be exposed to a virus before getting vaccinated and it may introduce itself within that two week period that the flu vaccination begins to take effect. Also, it may be a non-flu virus such as rhinovirus. Always call your doctor to describe the symptoms. Check out the website for Centers for Disease and Prevention to help answer your questions. I hope that your family gets well soon!
