    12-year-old boy with Hashimoto's

Hi, everyone. My son has been diagnosed with Hashi's after I noticed his thyroid was swollen. The antibody test was positive. His TSH is 8, but his t4 is in the normal range and he has no symptoms. He's happy and energetic and his weight is normal.

The pediatrician says we should not treat, but watch it. We will retest in three months and be on the lookout for symptoms. This makes sense to me. But I would like to hear from others who have experience with Hashimoto's in children--thoughts, tips, warnings. Thank you.

As long as he has no symptoms, it would be reasonable to me not to treat. Be absolutely sure you KNOW all the symptoms though; the list is lengthy. Have your symptom radar turned on. In the meantime, let him be a regular kid, not a 'sick' kid, for as long as possible.
Be aware though, that eventually, he'll have to be treated.
