    Please help,

I need advice or sugestions I am 55 year old and I have been diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism , Graves' disease. My doctor suggested I do radioactive iodine but I am really scared since it’s an irreversible procedure and it gives no guaranties. I would like to explore other alternatives like an operation to the thyroid, medication or alternative medicine. Any suggestions?? What do I do ??? Thank you

    Re: Please help,

I don't know what's usual in your country, but there are anti-thyroid prescription medications that can control the Graves' disease for a long time. Many people go into remission and can taper off the drugs to allow their own glands to resume function after an underdetermined period of time.

One such drug is methimazole; the other is propylthiouracil (PTU). These are often used in conjunction with a beta blocker med which helps control symptoms until the anti-thyroid can reduce the circulating level of thyroid hormone.

If I were you, I wouldn't be in favor of radioactive ablation, either. I'd definitely want to try an anti-thyroid med before anything else. If for some reason that doesn't work out fo you, I would opt for thyroid removal before RAI.

I'm sorry to say the so-called 'natural' treatments for Graves' are not reliable, if they work at all.

    Good luck to you!

    Re: Please help,

I don’t know anybody with Hypothyroidism and therefore I am a bit lost regarding my Portugal where I live RAI is “fashionable” as a response to thyroid problems and I have heard of some people that have done it only because their specialist offer no other solution and it was their best and only option. I have an appointment tomorrow with an endocrinologist and I hope to discuss treatments available with medication other than radiation. I have recently, lost nearly 20 pounds , have rash like itchy blisters on my upper body and face, and some pain in the bones of my right hand.
I hope this doctor tomorrow will be able to address all my concerns and if by any chance you think of any other questions I should ask please let me know
Thank you so much for your comments regarding RAI. Its was very comforting to meet somebody with the same opinion and concerns as me regarding RAI
