    Side effects from synthroid?

Hard to explain, but I'm not sure if I actually have a thyroid problem. My GP put me on 0.025 mg. of Synthroid and I've been having s.e. I don't like this at all! Anyone else having stomach problems (aching/burning), nausea and dizziness with this med? I am so med sensitive too. TIA

    Re: Side effects from synthroid?

Are you by chance lactose intolerant?
Synthroid contains lactose. Also contains acacia, which some people are sensitive to.
You can avoid those by substituting a different brand that uses different binders and fillers than lactose and acacia.

Otherwise, the active ingredient is a duplicate of one of the hormones your thyroid gland makes - not a "med", strictly speaking. If the gland can't make enough hormone for your body's needs, it's a great thing to be able to get some from a pill.

    Re: Side effects from synthroid?

Thanks so much for getting back to me and yes, I am lactose intolerant! Going to google acacia. The reason I'm on this is because I have extreme hot flashes and then freezing cold when it's maybe 74 degrees in the house. I can't sleep well every single night either. Hormones been checked and all is normal. I'll be 63 soon. Talked to my gp and asked her to see full spectrum and she said TSH was in the normal range, but low end of it and because of what I was going through, synthroid might help. Do I have to wean off of it? I've already called my gp and left that question as a message for her, but she hasn't gotten back to me because she's so busy. I don't want to call again even though she's been terrific. I'm afraid I'll be dropped by her because I was dropped by another gp a few yrs. ago. Can't go through that again. Pharmacist doesn't know the answer and usually does so I'm surprised. I just took the pill at 7:15 a.m., but don't want to take it any longer. If anything, I'm hyper, but I suspect what I'm going through may not have anything to do with my thyroid. I do have a few 3mm nodules. Thank you for any help you can give me. At my wit's end with all the stuff I have going on. G.I. issues are bad too.

    Re: Side effects from synthroid?

    hi girl,
if you are low range. our range is .38 to 3.58 I think. so if you are down low you should not be on synthroid. your symptoms are of hyperthyroid, not hypothyroid. I am lactose intolerant too and am able to take the brand name without issue. I think it best to call your doctor again. if she is terrific she will not mind you calling again. do you notice any rapid heart rate or a feeling of low blood pressure or high? the sweats happen when you are on the wrong dosage. been there many a time. been in a thyroid storm for over 6 months. dizzy, nausea, sweats like I was in menopause again.
this is not something to mess with. could throw you into Graves and we don't want that. yes you can just quit. I have with no side affects.
    peace,
    blue

    Re: Side effects from synthroid?

thanks so much blue! i think mine was 4 in the normal range, but low end. i'll be seeing my gp the week after next anyway so will quit this crap and tell her about it. my tummy can't take lactose and on top of it i have prevacid. looked up ingredients and can't tolerate some of them either so quitting that one too. yikes! my gp is terrific, but here in canada where we are, drs. don't talk on the phone except in rare cases. she did talk to me on the phone a few months ago, but she's so busy i don't want to call anymore. i did call about 3 different times already about synthroid. i don't want to get dumped by her. here, you wait a long time to see any dr. or specialist. it's awful! nobody, but a dr. can give you any test results till you go to your appt. it really sucks! i *may* have a bone spur on my right wrist, but won't know for sure till i see rheumy. can't stand it here, but have no choice for 2 more yrs. sorry for the rant. gentle hugs!

I won't get into the discussion of whether or not you need thyroid replacement but just want to clarify something that I think is confusing the issue in this thread.

A TSH at the high end of the range leans toward hypothyroidism or low thyroid function. This is the high (TSH) vs low (thyroid function) that I think you are getting confused from what I'm reading here.

TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is a pituitary hormone that stimulates the thyroid to produce thyroid hormone just like its name says. A high TSH can suggest that the thyroid is not producing enough hormone so the pituitary tries to stimulate it by producing more TSH.

So I think what your doctor was saying is that your thyroid may be underperforming (low hormone production) because your TSH was at the higher end of the range.

A better test of thyroid function would be measuring levels of the actual available thyroid hormones , free T3 and Free T4.

Thanks so much Harri3t! I do understand what you're saying and read about that. I just wasn't sure if I could get off the med without weaning. My gp has tested free T3 and free T4 and those were fine too. What she told me, because I have those weird symptoms, is that even though your thyroid seems fine, I will give you generic Synthroid to see if the symptoms go away. I hope I didn't confuse you or anyone else. Sorry if I did.

    Re: Side effects from synthroid?

4 is hypo for sure. not sure what your ranges are there. I notice I do best at 1.5 to 2.0. generic synthroid is inconsistent ingredients. suggest you ask for brand name instead. learned this from three different pharmacists. I trust their words. sorry the tummy med is out too. I do know how hard it is up there to get in to a new doc. suggest you take it 1 to 2 hours after a meal. that may help it not bother your tummy as much. you can also try cutting it in half and see if that helps. your body will tell you fast if you are off base or not. you are plugged into your body well and will feel it.
thank you to Harri3t for your concise input. well stated.
    peace,

    Re: Side effects from synthroid?

thanks so much blue! i'm not sure, but canada's rating of this might be different. i'll ask my gp if it is. i was thinking if anything i'd be hyper, but you guys on here know better than i do. i will def. ask pharmacist about synthroid because i also trust ours. i wish i could cut the g.i. med, but it's a capsule. darn! i may search the web to see if there's another one with less s.e. and covered by our ins. which isn't really ins. like it is in the US. they don't cover all meds so i have a hard time finding a good one covered. thanks harri3t again too.
