Question Fasting blood tests! Advice please.

    Hey everyone!

Just wondering if anyone has any advice for my blood testing tomorrow? I'm unsure about how many vials they will take. But I have very small/hard to find vains so it's always a case of the technician having 2-3 goes to try and get any blood at all!. I'm anxious but also very scared that they will have to have several attempts, which I don't do well at. I also have to fast from 10pm the night before.. Any reccomendations/advice? Thank-you.

I have the same issue with blood tests. What I have been advised is to start the day before with drinking plenty of water and continue to the time of the blood draw. Apparently a well hydrated body makes the blood draw easier. And, since I have followed the advice, my blood draws have been much easier.

You said you must fast- check if you can drink water -if so, that may help.

I answered your other post earlier this AM not realizing your tests were today. If your labs haven't been drawn yet ask if they can use pediatric collection tubes. That will cut down the volume of blood needed by more than half.

If this reply is too late, then you may want to keep it in mind for future blood draws.

Re: Fasting blood tests! Advice please.

I hope your blood draw went better with the extra water intake. I had only relayed to you what the clinic told me to make my blood draw easier but I saw online today that this advice is regularly given.

I read that blood can be up to 50% water and the extra water intake before a blood draw (starting the day before ) will plump up the blood and the veins making the blood draw easier.

Thinking about this further I recall two other things I should share with you:
1--- they have also heated the area where they will draw from either with having me hold my hand or forearm in warm water OR more recently they use a small hot pack that they put on the area for a few minutes.

2---they have also used a smaller needle with me (a butterfly needle I think it was called?) I am not sure if this is a pediatric needle or not. (I am sm. though not tiny--5ft.3in. and about 110) If they say the vein looks good that day, they sometimes just use a regular size needle.

When I present myself for the blood draw, I always mention I can be a "hard draw" that is apparently what they call it.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, had bloods drawn today. The tech got it on the second draw which was fine, I did mention to her that I was a "hard draw" normally they have troubles with finding a vain. Yes I have had them use a butterfly on me. I actually had five taken today which was the most I have ever had.
