    Question ENT or Endocrinologist?

Hello all. I am new to the board and new to having thyroid issues.

I recently had an MRI done on my C-spine for chronic neck issues, and the radiologist noted an incidental finding: an enlarged thyroid.

After getting an ultrasound, I was referred to an ENT to review the results. My appointment was yesterday and I was told my thyroid is 2.5 larger than normal, I have a 3cm nodule on one side, and 2.7cm nodule on the other and have multiple smaller nodules throughout. His recommendation is to either biopsy the nodules now knowing that I will need a thyroidectomy down the road (given its size) or forego the biopsy and get the thyroidectomy now (and they will test the tissue once it's out). I am asymptomatic but you can see a bulge in my neck. His concern is this "goiter" will ultimately cause breathing/choking issues and the larger it gets, the most complicated the procedure.

Of course I wasn't expecting this news when I went into the appointment. While I know thyroid issues are common and thyroid cancer is rare, I wasn't prepared to be told it needs to be removed.

I guess my question to you all is - should I also see an endocrinologist for another opinion? I have no idea if i have hyper- or hypothyroidism...graves disease, Hashimoto's etc. Does it even matter what the underlying condition is ahead of surgery?

I'm confused and scared. If anyone could share their thoughts on the matter, I would be forever grateful.

    Thank you!

the ENT will do the surgery to remove it, the endocrinologist will manage your condition afterwards.....blood tests to check your thyroid function, prescribe thyroid meds if necessisary, etc

Thank you for the feedback! That makes sense. I just didn't know if I needed to do an Endo consult before surgery (I've never seen one before)...I am so new to this.
