Post pathology reports- second opinion

I got my pathology reports back yesterday, and they are getting a second opinion. The reason for that is because the follicular cells they found are Hashimoto's, but because they are similar to cancer cells, they need to test again. He said something about papillary something or other too...have read up on this stuff, but I just wanted to know what other thyroidectomy surgery people's findings have been.
He also said there were multiple nodules, the biggest being 5mm. The good thing is that when I had my ultrasounds and biospies done, the biggest they found then was almost 2. It was my decision to get the surgery, so I am glad I did. Follow my gut!

Hi bluesnowflake,

I had an inconclusive biopsy, frozen section, and dissection. They ended up sending it to Mayo's before I got a final diagnosis. I, also, had hashi's which (from what they told me) makes it difficult to be able to make a diagnosis because the tissue is so inflammed. It is also hard to differentiate a follicular adenoma from a follicular carcinoma(which was my final diagnosis).
I just had a single nodule which made it more likely to be malignant. I've read it's a good sign if you have more than one nodule.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi...I also had a total thyroidectomy 4 1/2 weeks ago. My initial biopsy came back as" Autonomous nodules with focal atypia, scarring, and cystic degeneration". They samples were sent to Barnes Jewish hospital and came back with some characteristics of malignancy (standing out at low power) but final diagnosis was Nodular Hyperplasia.

I too made the final decision to remove it because I had multiple nodules with one painful and one bleedin nodule. The painful one would show up on ultrasound as 1.9cm and after they took it out, it was actually 3cm x 1.9cm (that is a whole inch and a half)...No wonder why the back of my neck was hurting...Best of luck to you!!
