    Swollen thyroid

I am looking for some information. Last week my niece had a lump on her thyroid the size of a golf ball. The hospital did blood tests and checked her thyroid and came back normal. Now her Dr. is stumped because she said it's her thyroid but her blood work is okay so she is sending her for a ultra sound. She is having severe fatigue, fast heart beats, hot and cold sweats and feels like she is smothering. Could this be involving her thyroid but still at times show normal reading on blood tests? Maybe giving her thyroid storms? We are just really scared because she is 26 and alot of people in this small town is coming down with cancer. She said the lump is not sore but bothers her upon swollowing. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Vball_#4

The thing about thyroid tests is that the lab range for normal varies WIDELY. One thing that I have learned in my quest of thyroid issues is to never settle for the word "normal" when it comes to tests. Always ask for the #s and the lab ranges. If you can get these from your neice and post them here, we will have a better picture of what's going on.
Yes it can be her thyroid with "normal" tests. There are many people on this board who have been diagnosed with thyroid issues when their tests come back within "normal" range.
The ultrasound should tell what's going on so please try not to worry. Most likely, it isn't cancer. But if it is, thyroid cancer has a greater than 95% survival rate.
Good luck to your neice and please let us know how it turns out.
    Barb

    Re: Swollen thyroid

Thanks. I talked to my niece today and she had the ultra sound done yesterday and her doctor called her and said it was a cyst and sending her to a neck specialist. Is this very serious? I saw her over the weekend and she was having a bad problem with her eye it looked like a blood vessel busted. She said when she lays down at night she has this loud swishing noise in her head. I am afraid her thyroid is out of wack and sending her pulse and blood pressure up. Shehasn't got the lab results on her thyroid testing yet. Has anyone here ever had a cyst? Is this the same as a nodule?
    Thanks Vball_#4

Without having had her Free T3, Free T4 (both should be in the mid-upper range of the lab normals) and Antibodies done, you can't really tell where she stands.
The symptoms that she's having appear to indicate thyroid. Please get her to get those tests done. It would really help to know what direction she needs. Hopefully your doctor isn't all that clueless......
