Effects of Thyroid Medication on Menstrual Cycle?

Just a quick question to see if maybe any of the ladies on this board experienced something similiar to what I am. When I first started the Levoxyl in June of this year my first period came 19 days early.. never thought anything of it. The next month it came 22 days early, again thought nothing of it. In August, my period came around the same time as the last one, but I discovered that the flow was different.. I was real heavy in the beginning and then after a couple days.. I did a cycle of stop, start, stop, start etc..Last month, again it came around the same time but I only went for 2 days and it was extremely light. Now this month.. I am late.. I've been having PMS symptoms but nothing seems to be happening. I have had alot of stress last month and its carried on into this month.. but I have been under worse stress and never been affected. Is it possible for the Levoxyl to mess my cycle up like this? Its odd that I am consistent before taking the medication and now I am faced with this. The last test that I had the TSH came back as 3.87..and doc won't give me another test for 6 months as I have already been there telling her about some of the other symptoms I am experiencing again..( mood swings, cold intolerance, fatigue esp after exercising, and heart palps). Any input on this would be appreciated.

It will definitely play with your regular cycle. I am usually 35-42 days and w/in and after only 3 weeks on meds I had my period in just 23 days - very light, no PMS, but there it was. Your cycle is determined by your metabolism and thyroid controls that, so taking the meds would effect it.

As for your TSH of 3.87, it is HIGH. Have you at least had your Free T's checked? If your doctor is only going by TSH and she doesn't think 3.87 is high, well then I'd vote to find a doctor who a) knows what she/he is doing and b) will listen to you.

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

The med isn't doing it as much as your wildly fluctuating thyroid hormone levels are. The med doesn't have any kind of chemical influence on the body the way that pain relievers or allergy meds do. It's the hormone that you're supposed to have enough of to keep your female systems running well. You don't have enough of that hormone yet. How do I know? Your TSH is far too high for someone in treatment, and if your MD won't do something more about that, you ought to find a better doctor.

Yes, my cycle also changed. When the estrogen cycle is up your body produces a protein that binds to both estrogen AND thyroid hormones. Therefore there is less thyroid hormone free for your system to use. When the estrogen cycle goes down, the body also produces less of this protein and then you get extra thyroid hormone in your system. I have heard of people that can time it and take an extra thyroid pill at the right time. A normal thyroid would produce accordingly. Since I started meds, I have a regular period (I never had a regular period). The first few periods were extremely heavy, but now they are pretty normal. I get anxious and get pms (I never experienced that before meds). Fortunately is not too bad.
