    Strange illness. Please Help.

My friend has been bothered by a very strange illness for the last six months. Around May this year, she started getting facial rash, throat pain, left-side neck pain, swollen eye-lips, numbness on her left arm and low-grade fever. Her general doctor found a 1.6cm lymph node on her neck. Antibodies couldn't help. So she was referred to see a ENT. But the ENT found nothing wrong in her throat and he could only conclude that she had acid reflux.

Then the general doctor ordered an x-ray on the cervical spine and lung which found nothing. So she was referred to see a endocrinologist. The endocrinologist believed she had subacute thyroiditis. The endocrinologist believed the swollen lymph node might be due to the throat inflammation. A fine needle biopsy was done on the thyroid gland and the result was normal. Two more tests were performed. A nuclear thyroid scan found her thyroid was ok and no longer inflammed. An EMG study found the nerves in her arms were functioning normally. The endocrinologist prescribed prednisone for her.

At this point, the throat pain was gone. The eye-lips were no longer swollen. But she was still having serious neck pain. From her own description, she felt like her neck was inflamed, stuffed and being squeezed inside. She would have serious pain when she tried to twist or bend the neck. She also started getting tinnitus in her left ear.

Then the endocrinologist referred her to see a neurologist. A physical checkup was done. The result revealed that her muscle was too tight and so it compressed the neck disc. The neurologist suggested her undergo massage theraphy. But after taking the Amitriptyline prescibed by the neurologist, she started feeling loss of balance, dizzy all the time and uncontrolled movements of arms and legs. Because of it, the general doctor ordered a CT-scan without intravenous contrast to her neck and head. But again it found nothing.

As you can see now, after seeing all the specialists and done all the diagnosis, there was practically no improvement at all. None of the specialists could help or even remotely pinpointed the exact problem. My friend is still getting serious neck pain, still feeling the inside of her neck stuffed and being squeezed all the time. She is still having arm numbness which is getting so serious that she has problem lifting anything over 2 lbs. She is also still getting tinnitus with ear pain and stuffed inside. The swollen lymph node is still there. What seems to be troublesome is the symptoms like neck pain, tinnitius and arm numbness which started out on the upper left side now start to extend to the right side of her body and the legs too.

Any opinions and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you looked up anything on Lupus? some of the symptoms sound suspiciously like that to me.

From on site with lupus symptosm listed:
    95% Achy joints (arthralgia)
    90% Fever over 100 degrees F (38 degrees C)
    81% Prolonged or extreme fatigue
    90% Arthritis (swollen joints)
    74% Skin Rashes
    71% Anemia
    50% Kidney Involvement
45% Pain in the chest on deep breathing (pleurisy)
42% Butterfly-shaped rash across the cheeks and nose
30% Sun or light sensitivity (photosensitivity)
    27% Hair loss
17% Raynaud's phenomenon (fingers turning white and/or blue in the cold)
    15% Seizures
    12% Mouth or nose ulcers

I am not a doctor, nor have I ever played one on TV...
