Does anyone know what the symptoms of thyroid disfunction would be in children?

Re: children and thyroid

In infants ~
Puffy face, swollen tongue
Hoarse cry
Cold extremities, mottled skin
Low muscle tone (floppy, no strength)
Poor feeding
Thick coarse hair that goes low on the forehead
Large fontanel (soft spot)
Prolonged jaundice
Herniated bellybutton
Lethargic (lack of energy, sleeps most of the time, appears tired even when awake)
Persistent constipation, bloated or full to the touch
Little to no growth

For older children, it's pretty much the same as adults, tiredness, pudginess, mood swings, hair loss, etc. ... one key symptom difference for hypothyroid children is slow or absent growth. And sometimes these kids are labeled ADD because of their lack of energy to be interested in the world.

Re: children and thyroid

Thanks for the replies. My son is 5 and has cronic constipation and has since birth. I was just wondering if maybe thyroid was one more thing to have checked. We've been down other avenues and the ped's say that it's just the way he is and maybe he'll grow out of it. We'll see!!

Re: children and thyroid

I neglected to list constipation, but of course, that's a classic sign.
It's always worth checking for thyroid... it's a simple blood test.
I will say though, that if it's his only sign or symptom of low thyroid, that may not be the problem. HypoT usually presents with several to many symptoms... hardly ever just one.
Hope you get it figured out!
