    Itchy Salty Taste

    ITCHY Salty Taste

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have too take thyroid medicine, but I don't know if this is thyroid related.I get bumps under skin that start itching and burning. The only way to get the itching to stop is to tear skin with fingernail and dig out what is making me itch. The substance that I find is hard and smells like salt rock, I also get a salty flavor in my mouth. They started in one area but now are all over my body. The doctors are not sure what this is, do you have any idea?

    Re: Itchy Salty Taste

Salty taste is one of the rarer effects of an underactive thyroid. My mom had that for several years before her hypothyroidism was diagnosed.
Two decades later, one of the first signs I had was a burning sensation on my tongue... very much like the feeling after eating a lot of extremely salty food.
Hmmmm.... I don't know about those lumps, though. Sounds gross.

How long have you been taking medicine for thyroid? My guess would be that you either just started it, and your dose isn't enough for you.... Or you've been on it for some time, and still... your dose isn't enough for you.

If you've been in treatment for that long, consider that you may be under-treated. Ask the doc to test your TSH, free T4 and free T3. If the results show your TSH to be above 1, and/or your other levels to be below the middle of their lab ranges, you probably have lingering symptoms of hypoT that could be remedied with a higher dose.
