    Help--terrible stomach pain, gastritis??

    Hi everybody--
Does anyone have any input on this....?
I have been suffering the last few days with terrible stomach pain. Mostly I feel it between the belly button and the sternum. Like stabbing/fiery pain.

It's worse when I am hungry and it wakes me up at 4 o'clock in the morning. Sometimes the pain is bad enough I break out in a cold sweat and I get really pale (according to my mom). Sometimes having some food will help for a while and I have been trying to eat more bland foods, smaller meals, and drink some ginger tea.

I recently changed my prescription from 50 mcg levothyroxine to 25 mcg Synthroid. I didn't have this on the levothyroxine. I got switched to a lower does in order to avoid hyperT with my Hashi's.

Saturday night when I first felt some symptoms, it was exactly 2 weeks since I started the new 'script. Coincidence?? also, I did feel a little bit hyper the following day--tremor and diarrhea. I did think it could be related to the pain, though. Plus, I have had an inordinate amount of stress in the last month, but the med change happened in the middle.

Has anyone had such gastritis with Synthroid? I know you're *supposed* to take it on an empty stomach and I have been doing that, but my mom told me that my dad, who also takes Synthroid, eats it with food at the request of his doctor. Any thoughts?

Is it the dosage decrease or the switch of the med?? Is it temporary? (good god I hope so....I can't function this way eating tums at my bedside at 4:30 am everyday )

    Hope you're all well---

I have had this problem off and on for 5 weeks now, i have got Graves Disease and they are currently trying to stablise my thyroid level.

I was told that it is something called acid reflux and i had the pain in the exact same place as you. My GP said that its all related to my thyroid problem and i also think that its partly due to my meds as well seeing as a side effect of my anti-thyroid drug (Carbimozole) is heartburn.

I am going back to see the specialist at the hospital this friday and my stomach will be disscussed more then, i will post the results for you.

I like you am very worried about it as it seems the more you read up on it, the more symptoms and diagnosis you give yourself , it may last for as long as 8 weeks due to the fact your excess stomach acid can damage your osophegous and this takes a while to heal.

The pain that you discribed has eased greatly for me with anti-acid tablets (Omeprazole) and gaviscon liquid but i am still left with a very uncomfortable feeling (like i have been punched and winded) and most mornings wake up with a general stomach ache

I hope this helps and i will post the results of my hospital visit on Friday

    Hey, grahamjac--
I wish you the best of luck at the hospital....hopefully you'll get the answers you're looking for...sometimes that's half the battle.

The pain I have I'm not entirely sure is reflux. I don't have it after I eat necessarily...it's worse when my stomach is empty. I thought reflux was also a little higher behind the breastbone...mine is under it almost directly halfway to my belly button.

It's a little less today, but that's also because it's daytime, I think. It gets worse at night and comes around again in the wee morning hours. I hope (but am not sure) that the pain and the diarrhea are not related, though I have a sinking feeling they may be....I'll keep you posted as well...

anyone else have a thought about this?

This is why i had my doubts about acid reflux cos my pain was between the bottom middle of my chest down to the top of my belly button but my GP said it was reflux due to my thyroid condition so i just have to take his word for it , the meds he gave me took 4 weeks to start having any effect what-so-ever even though my pain was never any better or worse when i ate , it was more of a constant indegestion pain , it was very anoying.

Now i am left with constant pains in my chest under my ribs both front and back but again these pains can be related to a thyroid dissorder so i am getting it from all directions LOL

Thanks for the best wishes and i hope all is well with you soon

    Graham

Sounds like an active ulcer. Had my first one at the ripe old age of 19. Stress really aggravated it. Lived on Maalox and small frequent meals for about 5 years. Disappeared for a long time, but an endoscopic exam 3 years ago showed that I have developed a new, small ulcer. It bothers me when I get really stressed out.
