weight gain from Armour thyroid

Weight gain from Armour thyroid

I have taken Armour thyroid since I was 25, am 63 now. For the past 20+ yrs. the dosage has been 4 grains daily. This whole time, including test results from last month, my Free T3, FreeT4,and TSH are always within the normal lab set range. This is the only medication I am taking. I feel fine but for the past 2 years I'm gaining an average of 2 pounds a month. Right now I weigh almost 140 pounds (5'2"). My eating habits have not changed and I have been excersizing more. The doctor feels it is from the thyroid medication. We have tried cutting the dosage down, but I become very fatigued, my skin cracks from being so dry, and my chlorestrol level becomes elevated. Brings me back to square one......Has anyone ever heard of a person reacting this way to Armour thyroid especially after being on the medication for so long.

Re: weight gain from Armour thyroid

Hello and welcome, I want to point out the part where you said" my TSH, Ft3 and Ft4 have always been in range".

The Ft4 and Ft3 need to be in the upper part of their ranges for you to feel good. Even though you are taking a very good dose of Armour thyroid, it might not be enough.

Some doctors will say that your tests are all in the so called "normal ranges". That can be anywhere inside the range.

If you have your lab ranges, you can post them here so someone can help you interpret them.

Also, the TSH is a usless indicator of thyroid function, when you are on Armour thyroid.

When I was put on Armour I gained 15 lbs in 3 weeks. They put me back on Thyrolar and slowly the weight came off. Unfortunately I still don't have good lab #'s so now it's back to Synthroid and Cytomel. I don't know that I'll ever find a good med or good dose.

Re: weight gain from Armour thyroid

I started out on Armour and I gained more than 10 pounds in the first 3 weeks. I stopped it, I had never had weight gain, even with the hashi's and nodules, I lost weight. Only the Armour made me gain weight.

I should have added, when I was switched over the Synthroid I lost 9 pounds in 4 days. I don't think I will try Armour again. It made me feel great, but the weight gain freaked me out.

I've had just the opposite reaction. Since I started on Armour in late March, I've lost 13 pounds, and I haven't even been dieting! Just lucky I guess.
