    does anyone know?

Can an thyroid utrasound detect cancerous nodes on the thyroid? Had an US at 9am and at noon the same day the doctors office called and said to come in at 10 am next day for US results. Doc said. "This is cancer until someone proves me wrong."

    Hi lackofsleep,
I'm not an expert but as far as I know, you can't tell the difference between malignant and begnin on ultrasound. Has he scheduled you for a thyroid scan or biopsy? Do you have nodules?

Sorry you are getting such frightening news.

Tanja is right, you can't get a cancer diagnosis without a biopsy. Have you had a nuclear scan---to show if the nodule is hot or cold yet? An ultrasound can show size, vascularity (how veiny it is) location, and whether it is solid or not. A solid, over 2cm nodule (vascularity doesn't matter because the whole thyroid is very vascular) on the left side could be cancerous---but only 15% likely to be cancer.

If you have had a nuclear scan and it is "cold" it increases your chances a bit more. A "hot" nodule is less likely to be cancer than a cold one.

You definitely need a needle biopsy (if you've already had a nuclear scan) for more info. But if your nodule is over 2cm, it is often recommended to remove it, because it is very hard to detect certain thyroid cancers until the nodule is removed.

I can't believe your doctor could be so calleous and uncaring and speak in such a manner to you. An ultrasound is not a diagnostic tool for thyroid cancer---just a flag that means you need more tests.

Don't let this doctor scare you---is he a specialist? Can you switch to another one?

There's no need at this stage of your diagnosis to worry about thyroid cancer---which is usually curable. Take it one step at a time, and find a doctor you can trust to work with.

    Re: does anyone know?

Geez, how can a dr do that to a person. There is no way to tell this unless you had a biopsy and even they can be untelling. I am so sorry.

Do just as Reece said, and I would also add, I think you should find a more knowledeable dr! If he doesn't know that you can't tell cancer on an US then he is pretty clueless about thyroid disease.

Please keep us posted and again I am sorry a dr did this to you.

Perhaps what he meant was that he wanted to be aggressive in his timeline (getting you in the next day), in case it is cancer. So he's being quick to act as if it was cancer, even though he doesn't know? Anyway, probably not the right way to say it.

Yes I have to go on the 19th take a pill with radio active dye in it and on the 20th get some kind of x-ray. I forgot the name of this test. Thanks to all of you for easing my mind about all of this.

you're doctor sounds a little enept to me.
I would seek out an ENT for a second opinion
an US will not tell them if it's cancer or not.

Good to see he is doing an uptake scan. See, he doesn't know if it is cancer because he is still running tests! This scan will tell if the nodule he sees is hot or cold. Keep this in mind, even a cold nodule can be benign, it is just a tool in "helping" to diagnosis what kind of nodule you might have. A biopsy is more definitive if they find a cold nodule and then the biopsy can tell what kind of cells are there. Remember, NO cancer dianosis is made for certain through these scans.

    Keep us posted!

    Re: does anyone know?

Besides this lump on the right side of my throat, I have been sweating alot. when I wake up I am soaked. I have neck and shoulder pain. My voice is hoarse and I feel like I have a feather in my throat. My right ear gets a sharp pain sometimes and my face gets red also. Maybe all of these things are not related but it just seems like my right side is freaking out. Yesterday my hands were shaking and I felt nausiated (spelling sucks) all day. I have been on synthroid for about three and a half years now with no problems. I take 175mcg a day. I know I'm rambling but I am so happy that I found a place where someone actually listens. Thank You All
