Autoimmune / Hashi's and Leaky Gut??

I've been hypo for 19 years. For most of that time, Synthroid worked just fine for me. For the last two years, something has been wrong. The only abnormal test result were the antibodies and i was told i have Hashi's, altho no one really told me what that means. I was sent to an endo, cytomel has been added, and i feel almost ok.

I've started seeing a naturopath to help with nutrition and losing weight, which of course, hadn't budged an ounce. When I mentioned the Hashi's, she had a whole new story to tell me, one that my docs never even hinted at. She focused on the cause of the autoimmunity, rather than "suppressing" the symptoms by treating with synthroid, etc. (not that she wants me to stop the meds, she does not want that). That ALL autoimmune diseases are caused by Leaky Gut Syndrome (allegedly discovered by an M.D., not a naturopath). That having a leaky gut leaves you open to more autoimmune diseases, and much more surprising to me, that the leaky gut can be corrected as can the autoimmunity.

I've already switched to whole foods, but was not removing all sugar, gluten, etc. Just restricting refined foods.

I don't know, maybe there's something to it. It makes sense - you have to wonder WHY our bodies decide to attack themselves. And lord knows, i've had digestive problems my entire life.

Has anyone been told this sort of thing? The Leaky Gut is quite Google-able. I'm still researching it, but thot I'd post here and see if anyone has heard of it or tried to improve it if they've been told they have it....

Interesting....At first I was going to say its pure hogwash after reading thousands of posts and knowing most of us, including myself have never been able to ditch the hashi's antibodies, but after reading a little about it, it could make some sense. Its interesting nonetheless.

Re: Autoimmune / Hashi's and Leaky Gut??

i'm not sure what leaky gut is, but i've had IBS (d) since i was a kid. i also had hyperT as a kid, and after years of "remission" from my hyperT problem, i'm now hypo. of course the IBS has never gone away.

i've wondered before about any connection. my naturopath and i will be testing a theory on food intolerance - AFTER the holidays of course. i'm hoping at least we'll find something that may trigger my digestion problems. i dont expect to be 'cured' from thyroid problems, but if there is any connection, then perhaps...??

    Hi Judy

Yes, my thyroid specialist told me the same thing - that long untreated leaky gut syndrome, and other severe gut probs such as fungal gut dysbiosis causes auto-immune disease, including Hashi's. This theory is being accepted by more and more doctors now (altho not by dyed-in-the-wool old-fashioned Endos!). (I think Dr Peatfield refers to it in his book The Great Thyroid Scandal And How to Survive it).

The theory is that with Leaky Gut Syndrome (LGS), the tiny holes in the gut lining become enlarged due to bacteria, or fungus, or parasites, or poor diet permitting particles of undigested food matter to get through to the bloodstream. The immune system then mounts an attack against these 'foreign invaders', but after years of having to be permanently on attack, without achieving the result it wants, the immune system gets so overactive it begins attacking parts of our bodies.

My doc says when this happens, we are each genetically predispostioned to get a particular auto-immune disease. Some get RA, some get MS, some get Lupus, some get TD, and some get rare unusual auto-immune diseases.

Right now I am focussing entirely on trying to cure my severe gut problems in the hope that my doc is right, and if I am successful I will get the Hashi's into remission, or at least under better control than it is at the moment. (At present my antithyroid peroxidase antibodies are 8,932 ! No wonder I feel so ill!)

I read a study that took place in Italy and it states that numerous people who were diagnosed with hashi's were taken off of wheat, barley, rye and other gluten containing grains and all have been cured of there thyrioditis..I would get off of gluten pronto!!!

i was reading the same thing.. i've cut out gluten, dairy, sugar, saturated fat, meat, and God knows what else.. now i just need to get the ELISA test.. which is for food allergies.. because if u eat allergic foods, ur antibodies shoot up to attack the food, thus attacking ur body again because its producing more antibodies.. once i get that done, imma cut out the allergic foods and go from there.. but there's no doubt its a smart move, because our bodies are meant to heal, you just have to give it the right tools to do so, and make sure your not harming it any more, with sugar and other things that cause autoimmune responses and leaky guts, etc. but allergies to foods are big, so find those out, as i will soon. there's something to it thats for sure. if you look at MS patients who do the diet change, they find dramatic improvements.

This is a really interesting 'conversation'. I have had very mild gut problems before starting thyroid meds. However for me 95% of my gut problems started after taking meds. Does this make sense?

The Elisa test is a fantastic idea, go for it. You'll be suprised what allergic foods can do to your body, mainly your adrenal glands. I met many people who cured there condition by doing this. The main culprit is wheat and dairy products. I would encourage anyone with hashi's to cut out grains entirely for at least 6 mos. It's been proven to be a cure but some people may need thyroid meds temporarily...Find a integrative/functional medicine doc and he/she can order these tests for you...Good luck!!
