Lightbulb I have had hyperthyroidism and had a tumor removed...

from the right side of my butterfly. I just this year had thyroid tests and the levels came back dead on right in the middle center scales of normal. So this is good. I'm wondering how does half of a gland do the work as a whole gland?
And are there chances with half a gland of becoming over-worked or under-worked?
In otherwards if the other half begins slowing down will I notice it?
Waht would the symptoms be if it does?
The opposite of when it was over-working, or possibly the same?
The reason I ask this is because, everytime I get sick or "come down" with something I get a faster heartbeat all day, and get them past feelings as I had when I had hyperthyroidism.
Does this have any relevance to the post removal of part of it?
Just curious, thanks.

Re: I have had hyperthyroidism and had a tumor removed...

Hi Don, it is possible for the remaining part of the gland to stay/become over active again and alot of surgeons prefer to take all the gland away to avoid having to operate twice. Do you have any labs at the moment? If it does become slow you will probally be given some thyroxine to make up for whats missing. Welcome to the boards if you can post your labs one of our 'thyroidies' will help you out. Good luck x

Hi Don,
Welcome to the board!
Hyper and Hypo have a lot of the same symptoms. Check the archives for a list of the symptoms( at least MOST of them). I read somewhere about 50% of the people with 1/2 removed do fine without meds. The other half need meds after about 5 years. I don't remember where I read that - been to so many thyroid info spots on the web. It could be subltle at first but since you will be aware of the symptoms and hopefully be under the care of a doc, you will probably know sooner if you are having symptoms.

I am sure others here that have 1/2 can help you more than I can. I had total TT 1/26 and had it because of nodules - no previous problems.

Again, WELCOME!!

Yes I will have a look at that, and post for them thank you.
My only concern now is rapid heartbeat, or it could just be stress or nicotine.
Will try new things, let yous know.
