Urine Test

I just got back from my appointment with my new doctor. He seemed quite nice and willing to listen to me, so we'll see how it goes. Definitely not a bad first impression...
Anyway, my question is: he ordered a bunch of blood tests as well as a urine test. What's the reasoning behind this? Is this just because I've never been to him before? He did mention doing a complete physical next time I see him, so maybe he's just looking to get a complete picture of my health? I've just never had this done before so I'm a bit curious. Also, I happen to be on my period right now, so will that affect the urine test?
Thanks so much to everyone who's been answering my continuous stream of questions with such good information. You're all so brilliant, and I wish you the best of luck (and most especially health)!

Re: Urine Test

What speciality does he practice? It wouldn't be unusual at all for a primary doctor to run the tests you mention on a new patient. He's looking for anything that can be contributing to ill health, thyroid or otherwise.

However, endocrinologists shouldn't need that much information to do what they do.

I don't think being on your period will affect your urine test, but I don't know for sure.
