| Just discovered thyroid lump
Hi
Looking for some advice please, hoping this is the best place to get it from those who are having/had same thing?
I first noticed a lump at the base of my neck towards the right side a couple of months ago. It is more prominent when I swallow. It isn't huge and can easily be missed. It is tender to touch.
As with all lumps, i was concerned and went to my GP (NHS as I live in UK). She said straight away it was a thyroid lump and arranged for me to get blood tests. These came back normal and she said I didn't need to worry, as no thyroid malfunction.
However I've read some articles that say that you can have a thyroid lump without malfunction of thyroid, but I'm not sure whether I should be insisting on any further investigation or if I should do as the doctor says and ignore it unless it gets bigger?
Any advice from anyone who has had similar, greatly appreciated, as I don't won't to seem like a neuortic woman but at same time everyone always says lumps need looked at asap.

Hiya Sharrie, I too am from the UK welcome to the board.
Go back to your GP love and ask for an ultrasound to be done on the lump.
All lumps should be investigated throughly and not just by bloods.
Did your Dr do any other blood tests other than a thyroid function?
can you get your results and post them on here and someone will tell you what your levels are.
You need to ask for your TSH levels and also ask what the ranges are. write them down then post here.
Some Drs interpret the results differently and say they are normal when in fact theyre not.
You are entitled to ask what the results are, dont be fobbed off by a snotty receptionist who says otherwise.
(apologies to the decent receptionists out there but some really are rottweillers)
take care

Hi Sharrie, welcome to the thyroid board!
Do you have any symptoms other than the tenderness? Trouble swallowing, ear aches etc.?
daisy01 is correct - I would want a ultrasound to find out the size and location of the lump. If it is over 1 cm they can do an FNA to check for cancer. This is my story-short version:
I had a lump disc by my gp in Oct - blood tests said thyroid functioning fine - however, GP sent me to have a ultrasound, measured about 3.3 cm, sent me to have a FNA to check for cancer. Couldn't tell, but because of the size it was recommended I have it removed. It can cause a lot of problems as it gets larger - and we didn't know if it was cancer. Now, bear in mind that it was very likely NOT cancerous and if it was probably the curable kind. Most Thyroid cancer grows VERY slowly so you shouldn't have to worry about rushing, but I wouldn't wait to insist on the sonogram to start with. Mine wasn't tender at all until Nov, when a doc felt it rather roughly. It was benign.
Post your test results when you get them - but even if they are normal you should get an ultrasound!
If you have any other questions or concerns, post them - this is a very good board to be on!
Take care.

Sharrie,
As the other people here said, you should try to get to a thyroid specialist (endocronologist or Ear Nose throat specialist, or surgeon in the US, I'm not sure who you would use), and have either an ultrasound, and/or an uptake scan, and a FNA if it's a decent size.
95% of these, which are often called "thyroid nodules" are benign. They are very common, and likely nothing for you to worry about.
If you can see it on your neck, it might mean yours is on the larger side, and you might want to fight to get it investigated further.
I had the reare experience, because I had thyroid cancer last year. I noticed a lump on my neck, and my bloodwork was perfect, and I had no thyroid symptoms. Nodules are sometimes associated with thyroid disease (graves, hashimotos), thyroid cancer, and often, just there growing on your thyroid for no apparent reason.

Hi thanks to you all for your replies. I got full blood tests, including thyroid , all normal, but don't know exact details, that's all I was told. Think I'll go back and ask for another GP in my practice and see what they say, thanks a lot, for info thus far. I do feel tired, but can't say I've any other symptons.

Yes, usually the thyroid cancer presents as nodule, or lump on your thyroid, and often no symptoms or problems with bloodwork whatsover. I was fine.
It is really really rare, so if you have no nodules, don't even let it enter your mind. If you do have a nodule, remember 95% of them are benign.

And nodules aren't goiters. I have a goiter - enlarged thyroid.

Hi
I asked for details of my thyroid blood test which came back normal according to my GP. They said TSH is 2.32 - but that's all they have - does this have any relevant meaning to anyone?

i was just recently found to have hyperthyroidism, with multinodular goiter. I just got the test results today and have a 4.2 cm hot one and the other is small and cold. My TSH is 0.01. I am scheduled for a needle biopsy tomarrow. What advice is out there. Anything I can do or know to be more comfortable about it all, encouragement, or whatever. My feeling is to just get over this and take care of it as soon as possible. I am pretty anxious and have found that it only makes me feel worse being anxious.Thank goodness for this web site. misohopi
