Results from Thyrogen -- Full Body Scan

Everything turned out good concerning the test for recurrence of growth or thyroid cells still in my body - I fell so blessed to have gotten such good results. When they found my nodules in July of 2006 they found them on a CT scan ordered after a chest x-ray revealed small spots on bottom lobe of lungs. This turned out to be Granuloma calcified and they said for safety reasons to have another in eight months. I now have to go for that next week and hopefully there will be no changes and that will turn out okay. Waiting on the results from test is so hard. Has anyone on the board ever dealt with granuloma --my lung speacialist said its common.

June---congrats on the clean thyrogen scan! That's great news!

Don't know anything about the lung thing, but if you're lung dr. isn't worried, then I think you should feel like everything is going to be okay too!

    June:
Did you actually receive the 2 thyrogen shots and the go for the radioactive I-123 scan? Just curious. I am getting ready for a yearly check. I have an ultrasound in a couple weeks, then will do the LID and then go for the shots and scans. No going off the meds.

If you did get the shots, did they make you sick?

    Take care!

    Kathy,

I had two shots a couple of days apart, but until the week of the shots, no one mentioned a thing about LID to me...(I did stick to low iodine the week of the scan just in case because I'm paranoid)...are you sure it's useful if you're taking meds anyway?

I felt fine after my shots, except it goes in the muscle so I felt a tiny bit sore---thyrogen is definitely the way to go! Good luck! Don't forget to get the thyroglobulin done that week too.....my doctor was reminded by the nuclear pp.!

Kathy, The schedule for my Thyrogen Body Scan was: Monday I went for my first shot in the hip, in the muscle and then chest x-ray. Tuesday I went for my second shot. Wednesday I went for my RAI pill and was told on Monday not to eat fish or shell fish for the week and to stay away from children and pregnant women for Thursday and Friday. I went back on Friday for my full body scan, ultrasound, blood work and lucky the Radiologist went over all test except for x-ray and blood work and said all was fine. I stayed on all medication and it was a "piece of cake".

    Hope yours is the same.

    June and Reece:
Thanks for the info. June, I am scheduled exactly like you with the shots, bloodwork and scan. I can get my ultrasound done anytime. My endo insists on the LID for three weeks. His rules. Lost weight on it last time so I don't think it will be too bad.

    Will keep you posted.

Re: Results from Thyrogen -- Full Body Scan

I'm hoping I can get Thyrogen the next time I need the scan. I've had two so far and had to go off meds each time. The first time I gained about 15 pounds, the second time I gained 16. It has taken about 6 months to get back to where I was pre-TT.

My endo seemed open to using Thyrogen but he cautioned that it is very expensive and some insurance doesn't cover it. Are you folks paying for it out of pocket or is your insurance paying?

Archie, I am fortunately or unfortunately a Medicare patient and I assume they are covering me -- my Doctor didn't mention anything to me and of course he is aware that I am Medicare and I think if Medicare didn't cover he would have told me. Hope you are able to go that route, I had no problems at all -- and I hear from many its a better route than going off medications. Good luck to you.

    Archie:
I believe that my insurance company will be paying for the cost. Medicare/caid just approved it's use in November - I think. I am waiting to hear the ok!

Re: Results from Thyrogen -- Full Body Scan

Just got a call from the pharmacy that produces Thyrogen. It costs approx. $2,000.00. My co-pay is $422.00. I have really good insurance. So, Archie is right, it is expensive but most likely will be worth it. I had to pay the co-pay up front in order for them to ship it to the endo. Hope that helps!

    Kathy,
It's definitely worth it....so much better than going hypo for weeks.

The hospital that did the scan had to order it thru. a special division of my drug co. insurance (oddly enough, not the health insurance). In NY I think it was about 2700 a shot, I was fortunate I paid very little of that, but would have gladly paid/begged or borrowed, just to not have to go hypo ever again!

Yeah, I know what you mean. Don't really want to jerk my body off the meds. i am still having a hard time adjusting - it's been almost a year. Endo wants me to increase to bring numbers down. They are hovering around 5 so I upped the Levoxly and will try more in two months. Don't want those cell to wake up!
