    Re: Hypothyroidism cause Anxiety?

    These are the main symptoms I was told to have in my symptoms log for hypothyroidism.

    Hypothyroidism is the medical term for a sluggish thyroid. It can lead to a wide range of hypothyroidism symptoms:

    * severe fatigue, loss of energy
    * weight gain, difficulty losing weight
    * depression and depressed mood
    * joint and muscle pain, headaches
    * dry skin, brittle nails
    * brittle hair, itchy scalp, hair loss
    * irregular periods, PMS symptoms
    * breast milk formation
    * calcium metabolism difficulties
    * difficulty tolerating cold and lower body temperature
    * constipation
    * sleeping more than average
    * diminished sex drive
    * puffiness in face and extremities
    * hoarseness
    * bruising/clotting problems
    * elevated levels of LDL (the “bad” cholesterol) and heightened risk of heart disease
    * allergies that suddenly appear or get worse
    * persistent cold sores, boils, or breakouts
    * tingling sensation in wrists and hands that mimics carpal tunnel syndrome
    * memory loss, fuzzy thinking, difficulty following conversation or train of thought
    * slowness or slurring of speech

    Anxiety is not directly listed, but they do list depression and a depressed mood.

    Depression has its own side effects as well. Anxiety is often considered a side component of a depressed state. SO I would say, yes. Even being mildly hypo might cause anxiety.

    SIncerely,
    MG

    Anxiety and/or panic attacks can definetly be a symptom or result of your thyroid not performing properly. I started having it about three years before I was diagnosed - for along time it was my only symptom. I couldn't figure it out. There was nothing going on that I should have been having anxiety to the extreme that I was. I didn't go to the doctor. My sister was having the same symptom with her thyroid also.

    Your thyroid and adrenal gland (which causes the anxiety/panic) are part of the same system - they are linked together. If your thyroid is not functioning right it can throw you in to anxiety attacks from out of no where.

    i was on klonopin before and that didnt do much. the lexapro takes a few weeks to get into your system but i have felt better on it actually and its only 1 time a day, rather than 3 like klonopin.

    Re: Hypothyroidism cause Anxiety?

    Over the last 2 or 3 weeks, I suddenly notice a bunch of symptoms getting worse:
    swelling ankles, so that I have to take off my shoes and put up my feet at work
    extremely tired
    very depressed/hopeless feeling
    joint/back pain and stiffness daily
    anxious about everything
    gained 5 lbs in the last 3 weeks without change in diet

    I'm currently on 37.5 mcg levothyroxine, and that dose increased last winter. The joint pain and swelling are new symptoms for me. Is it normal that all of these should get worse over such a short time span? Thank you!

    Diva, that is a very small dose you are on.

    How long has it been since your thyroid levels were tested?

    Are you getting copies of your lab reports? In the U.S. they now have to give you copies of medical records of you ask for them.
