    help with thyroglobulin range

Hi all - Only have one question/lab result right now that I need help with. My thyroglobulin is 402.0 high reference range is .5 - 55.0. Recap - thyroidectomy 8/06 for follicular thyroid cancer, RAI in 9/06. No prior bloodwork raised any red flags. My endo says that I might still haave thyroid tissue left or it could be a recurrence. My question is - if it is remaining thyroid tissue wouldn't prior blood work have also shown a high TG? Pessismist that I am I am assuming my cancer is back and spread due to extreme tiredness, aches and pains, pains in forearms and thighs (bone pain). Also having choking feeling and like something stuck in my throat. Does a cancer diagnosis make everyone paranoid or is it just me?
    Thanks to all.

    Hey Susie,

Sorry your TG is so high.. but it was undetatable until now, it probably does mean you have some cells left over..
I would not account your symptoms with the high TG until you get all your scans in..

    Good Luck.

Hi! I would concur with the previous poster. The thyroglobulin number in thyroid cancer patients should be 0 - at least that's what my endo shoots for. I had pap cancer last year and have had at least 3 TG tests. All 0.

How much RAI did you get last year? Also, have you had your yearly scans yet??? Keep us posted.

First, was this tg taken while you were hypo, or on medication? It makes a difference.

Also, keep in mind that it might mean that there is thyroid tissue, not necessarily thyroid cancer, but since they don't know without biopsy, they consider all thyroid tissue as if it's a recurrence.

I agree your symptoms might be coincidence.

Has your endo. been keeping your TSH supressed?

Let us know what happens---if you haven't had scans yet, you will.....I hope everything goes well.

    Re: help with thyroglobulin range

My TSH was 5.7 at my bloodwork done in July. Prior to that I hadn't had blood work since January. At time of high TG reading my TSH was .2 or something like that. This will be my first scan. I moved and had to change endos. Last dr wanted a scan at 6 months. This one wanted to wait a year. I started the LID yesterday and will be calling to schedule scan today. Thanks for everything.
