    large mass right side center

Hello, My daughter (15) went for her yearly sports checkup and DR. found a large mass on her neck (mid line, little off to right looks like an adman's apple) which she was concerned about....she asked my daughter if it hurt when she swallowed or if she had trouble breathing ( both answers are no) Dr. was concerned that it was wrapped around something or attached to her thyroid and sent her for u/s of neck and thyroid, took blood and referred her to ENT. Is there anything to worry about? She has had this lump for about 7 months it does not hurt or bother her but you can notice it on her neck. DR. felt it to be the size of a golf ball. When daughter swallows you can see the mass move up and down with throat motion.

any info will help very worried. Cheryl

Re: large mass right side center

Best case scenario is that it's a benign nodule.
Worst scenario is that it's a malignant nodule; even that is 98% of the time not a big deal. Thyroid cancer in a young person is very slow-growing, hardly ever spreads, and is completely curable over 98% of the time.

If it's the only nodule, it has a higher chance of being malignant, but statistically is still not likely to be cancer. It should be biopsied using a fine needle to aspirate a little of the contents for pathologic examination.

I hope that sets your mind somewhat at ease. Good luck to you and your daughter.

If it's the thyroid, and it's a nodule, it's not life threatening, so please, try to get the scary thoughts away.

As midwest says, it will probably be biopsied with a needle, and you will take it one step at a time from there......just so you know pp. can live without a thyroid a long healthy wonderful life......so if in the end it's decided it should be removed, she will be fine.

I am going through the same thing, although I have four large nodules and all the research I have been doing supports what the other posters have said, that most likely it is a benign nodule, and if she is not having symptoms, she doesn't need any treatment at all. If it is a malignant nodule, she can have the thyroid removed and she just has to take meds to replace the thyroid. But the chances of it being malignant are very small in this case.

I am a mother, so I understand being worried not matter what people tell you, but you should set your mind at ease for now and just have the tests needed to rule anything out.

Good luck to you and your daughter!

Thanks to all who answered... It is hard waiting your mind starts to wonder....Ultra sound was done 10/5 blood work 10/01/07 won't get results of blood and Ultra sound till 10/15. ENT DR. will not see until 10/23..... earliest he can get her in. hate the waiting.

Should she continue with her travel sports? Or should I tell her coach? not sure what to do.

It should be fine for her to continue her activities, but you should ask her doctor to be sure. In the off chance that she is hyperthyroid, strenuous activities could be risky. However, she would have troublesome symptoms if she were hyperthyroid... fast pulse, high blood pressure, shakiness, fast bowels, headaches, unexplained muscle pain, weight loss, etc. If she has none of those, it's almost certain she would be in no physical danger to continue her sports.
But... please check with her MD just to make sure.

    Need Thyroid doctor

Hi, I'm new to the thyroid boards. I'm wondering if anyone out there can recommend a good thyroid doctor in Southern California--anywhere between the Los Angeles area and Orange County. I've gone to a Long Beach doctor, a thyroid specialist, the last two years for an annual check up. Last year, I was told I had a very small nodule, but that it wasn't anything to worry about. I thought it was a fluid rather than a solid one. This year, I went back for blood work and an ultrasound in July. The doctor said he'd call me if there were any changes with the nodule and reason for further study. Goodness, he did call, but three months late, so, needless to say, I'm looking for a more reliable doctor. I'm a bit freaked out about the results, which the doctor literally read to me off of the ultrasound report over the phone, but didn't explain. My ultrasound showed a "well-defined mildly hypoechoic solid nodule" with "one focal shadowing calcification posteriorly." I think a nodule being solid, mildly hypoechoic, and having some calcification are all red flags for cancer, but I also think the single nodule is very small: 3.4 by 1.4 by 1.3 cm The ultrasound shows a "slight interval size increase" from the previous year--from about 1 cm to about 1.5 cm. So if anyone can recommend a good doctor so I can get this followed up, I'd greatly appreciate it. As I said, I'm a bit freaked out about this because I know nothing about the thyroid and related cancers and am a single parent. (I have great insurance--Blue Cross PPO) Thank you!
