Should I see an Endo or ENT?

    Hi all,

Actually, I'm asking this on behalf on my mom.

They recently did an ultrasound on her thyroid and found it to be "mildly enlarged and the isthmus thickened." On the thyroid they found an isoechoic nodule in the left side and a cystic lesion in the mid pole with internal septation. There appears to be a peripheral nodule within this cystic lesion as well. Even though the isthmus is thickened, no nodule could be identified. On the right side, there is a hypoechoic nodule that is consistent with a colloid nodule. Two more hypoechoic nodules are noted in the midpole. Two more hypoechoic nodules (consistent with colloid nodules) are noted in the inferior pole.

The overall impression was: Enlarged thyroid gland with multiple benign-appearing nodules.

The Primary Care doctor suggested that she go see a specialist to have it biopsied. I am currently in the process of looking for doctors for her. We are fortunate enough to be in NYC so have plenty to choose from. Anyway, my main questions are as follows:

    1) Should we go to an endo or ENT?
    2) For ENT doctors, should I pick one whose clinical expertise is in thyroid surgery or thyroid disorders? I'm not sure if there is a difference, but on the hospital website, they list the doctors clinical expertise and this is how they did it.

Thanks for reading this long post! I appreciate any inputs and advice!

    Thank you so much!

    I'd vote for an ENT
if you need surgery an ENT will be the one to do it

ENT's or general surgeons are the ones to perform thyroidectomies or even biopsies.
But, the endo would do the conservative methods meaning meds. I would probably actually have her start out with either her GP or endo to try conservative - it's ALWAYS best to try to suppress the gland instead of removing it...b/c it can improve, but once removed ....not good! I'm speaking from experience since I have NO thyroid and it's tough! Most specialists want to try meds first b/c if it's benign, always better to leave the thyroid alone!

    Hey everybody!

Thanks for the input! I really appreciate it. I scheduled an appointment with an ENT doctor for Monday. I hope all goes well.

    Again, thanks for everyone's help!
