    Splitting the pills??? EEEK!

How the heck do people split the pills with any kind of precision or does it really matter? I did not know they have a pill splitting device at the drug store! I had cut the pills with the kitchen knife but they are not always even. So on the advice of the pharmacist I bought this contraption. The pills are still crumbling although they seem to be a little more even. The shape of the Levoxyl is a little easier than the generic round levothyroxin though. I think since they stay in the system a little longer it would not matter in the long run BUT if anyone can give any tips....I would be thrilled.

You know there is a commercial on TV about the older person who has trouble and it shows the pharmacist offering to split the pills. So I asked for the heck of it but was told, No...they will not do it for me! Hoppy

I use a pill splitter I got at the drugstore. Works great.

That's what I bought. Why are my halves crumbling? Is there a scientific way to lower the blade that I am not understanding?

It's probably the pill it's self that is causing the problem. I used to get prescriptions filled at Walmart. I have a prescription for xanax and when I would split the ones walmart gave me they'd crumble in split unevenly. I switched to RiteAid and get the same prescription filled with them and the pills are the same color but firmer and they don't crumble. Best I can make out the two different pharmacies use two different manufacturers.

What about the blade itself?? Maybe for some reason it is dull even though it is new??? I also have a pill splitter and mine works good. Although I have yet to try to split my levo pill. I mainly use it for pain pill when needed or stuff like that when I don't feel or like taking a whole pill...

Hmm. I know mine works better if I bring the blade down swiftly, as opposed to slowly. But it could be the pills themselves like some have suggested!

I've owned two different brands of cutter. One cost about $1, the other about $4. The more expensive one works a LOT better.
Still, Armour is difficult to cut. I found that it works best to use as little pressure on the tablet as possible, with the better cutter.
