Would I look stupid going to the doctor and asking for a thyroid test?

I am starting to think I may have an under active thyroid like my mum.

    Ok so my symptoms/risks are:

Family history (mum had an enlarged pituitary gland plus under active thyroid or something like that)
    Female
    fatigue/exhaustion
    low blood pressure
    low heart rate
    depression
    lots of facial hair
    really bad menstrual cramps
    loss of energy
    lack of concentration
    forgetfulness
Really really dry skin (my feet crack and bleed even though I apply cream twice a day!!!)
    Always feeling run down
Inability to loose weight (265 pounds) despite being on the University's Badminton, football and tennis teams whilst going to the gym 6 days a week and keeping a balanced (generally) diet.

Basically I dont want to go to the doctors and present all these symptoms and them wasting time doing a check and turning out to be normal.

Thanks for reading this thread and thanks for any advice you may be able to give

    ~ Rach

No I don't think you'd look stupid if you asked tests Be sure to ask both TSH and FT4 and if something (anything) comes up in those tests you need to get tested for thyroid antibodies too.

    Hi Rach

Great to see another Welsh girl on here - I'm originally from Bridgend in South Wales

I would definitely go and ask for a thyroid panel - thyroid disease is hereditary and that in itself is reason for you to get checked out. Just tell the doctor there is a family history and that you'd like to get yourself checked out. Be prepared to be offered anti depressants (docs love to do that to thyroid patients) but stand your ground and tell them if they're happy to rule out thyroid disease first then you'll be happy to look at other forms of treatment!!

Hi-light the fact that your mum wasn't diagnosed until having the FULL panel...which includes checking your antibodies and FT3...docs in the UK arent too fond of the FT3 test but it really is a must to find out exactly whats going on with that butterfly gland of yours.

    Good luck

Rach xxxx (got the same now too )

Forgot to add...it may also be worth you getting your sex hormones tested to see if theres any other reason for the facial hair. Thats a problem I'm having at the moment too...hate it!!

I don't have much to add here. You have been given great advice. I second both Finnmaid and tygwyns advice.

    I would go in stressing family history and your symptoms and request;
    TSH (3rd gen/sensitive)
    Free T3
    Free T4
    TPOAb
    TGAb

tests at the minimum. Have them PROVE to you that it is not your thyroid causing your issues. ALSO get a copy of the lab results AND ranges. Do not accept NORMAL. You want to be optimal. You can be normal in range and still not optimal. Such a case is often ignored and overlooked.. EVEN if you have high antibody levels.

Re: Would I look stupid going to the doctor and asking for a thyroid test?

Hiya guys thanks for the amazing advice. I got a bit confused when I went to the doctors and I think the system is a bit different here. But the doc seemed really nice and I had the blood tests this morning for ...

    FBC - Full Blood Count

    TFT - Thyroid Function Test
    Testosterone
SHB6 - Sex hormone binding globulin test
    FSH - Follicle Stimulating Hormones
    LH- Luteinizing Hormone test
    RBG - Random Blood Glucose

Will these do for now? Will see how it goes I guess...

Re: Would I look stupid going to the doctor and asking for a thyroid test?

It looks like they are testing menopause, PCOS, Insulin issues with the
    Testosterone
SHB6 - Sex hormone binding globulin test
    FSH - Follicle Stimulating Hormones
    LH- Luteinizing Hormone test
    RBG - Random Blood Glucose

I am not sure if the TFT is complete including antibodies. I doubt it. I am thinking it is just a TSH and Ft4... okay found it. Depending on your MDs request the TFT is either TSH, T3, T4 or TSH, Ft3, Ft4. This was from a Leeds pathology laboratory group. If the TFT comes back in normal ranges, push for antibody testing based on symptoms.
