    Cyst/nodule on thyroid

I went to see my dr yesterday about something unrelated but mentioned while I was there that Id got a large lump on the front of my neck and the glands at the sides & back of my neck felt tender & swollen (for about 2 weeks). She identified it almost immediately as being a thyroid cyst and that it was very common, nothing to worry about but if it's still there in a month to come back. I thought this sounded pretty strange and didnt understand why/how I'd got a large cyst on my thyroid so I had a quick look on the internet and found that although they are common I probably should have had some tests to rule out anything different. I'm sure my doctor knows what shes doing but I just found it strange as its very large (I'd probably say 2 or 3cm)..it dosent hurt or feel tender but I feel like the lymph nodes in the sides & back of my neck are tender..would this be related to the cyst?

Also for some time I've had difficulty swallowing and constant throat clearing...long before the lump appeared. I'd only just considered that the two might be related?

Finally if it's not gone in a month can anyone tell me from experience what they would do. And if anyone knows why I wasnt sent for tests & if thats normal. I'm sure I'm just worrying too much but my mother has an underactive thyroid and although I have no symptoms of that condition it made me worry something could be wrong.

You can't know if it's a cyst or a solid nodule unless you have an ultrasound, and that will give you the size.

I think you should go to either an ENT or an endocronologist to evaluate this nodule/cyst. They are very common, and most (95%) are benign, but it must be evaluated---the next doctor should probably order blood work as well.

If it's constricting you and you are feeling discomfort, I make an appt. now for next doctor---it can take a while to get an appt.---I wouldn't waste time waiting with a doctor that will just have to send you on for further testing anyway.

wow. that was me two years ago. Only I stuck with my GP for a year because they ordere US and blood work. It wasn't until my hypo symptoms became more prominent that both my GYN and GP said I HAD to see and Endo.

Gee I am so glad they talked me into the referral. I get my US and bloodwork done right there in the office without having to go to a separate testing lab. AND I finally was given synthroid treatment. it has been 3 months... they nodule is shrinking.. and I feel GREAT!

If your GP won't test you. Call an endo or call your gyn for a referral if need be. You will feel so much better if you just go in and get it check and treated.

Thanks for the replies. I don't know how it works in the states but in the UK I think I'd need to be referred by my GP to see a specialist - I don't think I'd just be able to make an appointment myself. I have severely freaked myself out by reading too much stuff on the internet, but my doctor has always been very good in the past and brushed this off straight away as nothing to worry about. But from what I've read lumps that are large, don't move around & are fixed, cause difficulty swallowing etc are the kind that need checking out? I'm also worried about my lymph nodes in the rest of my neck being swollen...that dosen't seem to fit the thyroid thing & I don't have a virus or infection. I suppose unless it gets bigger or anything changes I'll just have to wait a month like she suggested. I do have a friend whose is an oncologist so may ask her to have a quick look and see if she agrees with my GP's reaction. I'm not suggesting it's cancer & I'm sure I'm just being paranoid but it would just be nice to know that it is nothing (with a bit more reassurance than a quick prod by the GP!)

    Re: Cyst/nodule on thyroid

My husband discovered a lump on his throat in December. Looked like a big marble under the skin moving up and down like a second adams apple. He is constantly clearing his throat. Has had the ultrasound and it is confirmed as a single thyroid nodule but it is shrinking. Now about the size of a regular marble. Waiting for fine needle biopsy at the end of Feb to determine if anything to worry about. No meds yet for it. Waiting for thyroid function test results but he feels great. He had the H1N1 vaccine a month before the swelling was noticed and he's convinced it has something to do with that. When I read the post about the constant throat clearing I had to write about our experience.

    Re: Cyst/nodule on thyroid

My small nodule was discovered by chance during a routine checkup by the doc feeling around my neck. Ultrasound showed a semi-solid nodule so we did the FNA, which was inconclusive. ENT said the only way to do a biopsy was removal of half the thyroid, send the nodule to the lab. If benign they would sew me up and send me away. If malignant they would remove the other half of the thryroid. I woke up to the sound of the nurse saying "total thyroidectomy" so I knew it had been malignant. The good news was it was confined to the thyroid. Don't panic; even if the nodule is malignant, thyroid cancer is usually very curable.

    Re: Cyst/nodule on thyroid

I had an huge fluid filled cyst on my thyroid and had an FNA done to drain fluid. It went down in size immediately after the FNA but a week later was back to the original size. The pathologist test came back negative for cancer. But I was still undecided on whether to have it taken out or not.

About two days ago its shrunk back down to less than half its size on its own. I haven't taken any Thyroid meds and my symptoms have gone away almost completely. I can't figure out what's going on since my next endo appointment isn't until Mar 26th. I'm guessing the fluid is being release elsewhere in my body instead of collecting in my nodule. It's kind of freaking me out since I'm used to staring at this huge lump on my neck that is slowly shrinking.

Has anyone ever heard of an fluid fill nodule shrinking for no apparent reason?
