    Baker's cysts in knees.

    Hi,
Does anyone else suffer with Baker's cysts since being diagnosed hypothyroid? These cysts (in both knees) started appearing within weeks of me starting on thyroxine treatment.

They swell up and the swelling pushes out to the back of the knee, and they get bigger over about 10 days until they burst. Then the whole cycle starts over again.

My original GP said they were caused by being hypothyroid but l've noticed if my medication (Armour) isn't exactly spot on then they speed up the cycle of growing and bursting.

l wondered if anyone had found a way to relieve these cysts or cured them somehow.

I have never heard of that. Can you get in to see a dermatologist? I have Hashimoto's hypothyroidism and am on 100 mcg of T4 (generic). Even on the synthroid samples I never experienced anything like that... I hope you find out the source soon. Oh I ask the other ladies in my family. Nada. Out of four on synthroid or synthroid/armour combos.. no cysts like that.

    Re: Baker's cysts in knees.

A quick academic search brought up the main cause as retained joint fluid mainly caused by rheumatoid arthritis or degenerative arthritis. Have you thought of trying to get into see a rheumatoid specialist? I would ask.. treatments are specialized to fluid removal and hydrocortisone shots.

Have you had any knee injuries? These can increase possibility of these cysts as well. Hypothyroidism when under treated can cause fluid retention that would probably aggravate this condition.

    Re: Baker's cysts in knees.

    Hi MG,
Thanks for replying. l haven't been referred to a rheumi. l have only heard about 1 other hypothyroid person having them. The gp says it is the arthropothy (sp) aspect that is causing them. They are just such a nuisance as my knees give out sometimes and the pain can make me weep. l've had both knees x-rayed and there isn't enough arthritis to show on the x-ray. l do have fluid retention too.
