Enlarged Thyroid with Cysts with normal bloodwork

I went in to my Dr for a routine yearly exam and found out that I have an enlarged thyroid. She sent me in for bloodwork and an ultrasound. The bloodwork came back "normal." They tested Free Thyroxin (0.87) and Sensitive TSH (0.55). The ultrasound found both lobes enlarged with small scattered cysts (5 mm) on both lobes of the thyroid gland.
The Dr then sent me to have a thyroid uptake and scan done. The scan showed that I don't have hot spots or cold spots. The uptake showed a high number and they asked me to come back the next morning to have it read again, and it was still high. The guy doing it told me that it meant that my thyroid was hyperactive.
I saw an Endo the next day and he had more bloodwork done because he suspected Hashimotos or Graves. All of my bloodwork from that came back normal. The Endo is out of town for the week so I can't ask him any of my questions right now.
Does anyone know what I could be suffering from? My thyroid seems to shrink and grow on its own anytime it wants to. The other day, I felt like someone was choking me and my neck hurt pretty bad. I was also extremely emotional that day and I am never emotional. The next day, everything was back to "normal" with no choking, no pain, and no emotions out of whack. I also have a catch in my throat that comes and goes as well. Anyone have this? Everything I read from others with this problem, it is something they have all the time, not something that comes and goes.
I am not on any meds. The Endo says that my condition isn't severe enough to warrant meds and he wanted to see what my labs came back, which is just fine with me. I would rather not take anything unless it is absolutely necessary!

    Greeting CMO77

Hoping this post finds your day going well... I'm glad you've chosen to join the HealthBoards ~ I've found them to be validated, comforting, knowledgeable, caring, understanding ECT. ~ ~ I've been able to find a
good balance of imput when I do visit a post ~ gleaning from them what will help or to possibly consider.

Is there anybody else in your family that has Hashimoto/Graves ? There was a thyroid problem with my Grandmother. Unfortunately, I didn't get the spects as to which one. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's 20yrs. ago. Now, my sister has Hashimoto's & was diagnosed in 08.

Have you had the opportunity to check out any info. on like the Thyroid Board on this site... I was quite impressed with some of the posts.
*** There is awesome info. pertaining to what would throw blood work off. When it comes to fasting, vitamins, beverages, food taken or drank before blood work. Even days before test on Thyroid.
Beings the Doc is off for the week. Now, you can check it out on the Boards. Start from beginning.. Host of info..I'm glad for it..

One of the Endo's I fired !!! as I tried earnestly to work with Him. I guess I was one of his first victims from graduation.

Finally, found an Endo that listens not only to Me but, considers what the blood work has reveiled. She will request more blood work done providing the results are within the parameters of my past blood work. If it's off to far it's a redue... She's even gone as far as to send me to another Lab... Anywho, point is.. If you are not satisfied with results from present Doc. & there is one, two many red flags.. Move on... don't waist your precious time...I went through this miss-placed guilt thing...Basing itself on him being what I now call a ( White Coat ) It's me, not him..he's waring a white coat, he's educated in this field.... Yokes on me.. I learned ~

    Keep posting on this subject..

    Best Regards : DRAIN BAMAGED

Nobody, that I know, has Hashimotos or Graves in either side of my family. Nobody has ANY thyroid issues that I know of, and I asked! I am happy with my Endo so far. He is supposed to be the best in the state. I have absolutely no symptoms of any disease of the thyroid. I only have an enlarged thyroid with cysts. I have done ALOT of research on different thyroid issues, but nothing seems to fit what I have.

So good to read the positives of your thyroid tests, your Doc & No family thyroid issues...
As you await the Docs return.. I'm throwing this one out there...Ready, CATCH:

Could it be possible the Thyroid is enlarged due to the cysts only.. like a bug on your shoulder.. you brush it off.. and the Thyroid is adjetated in trying to work these off.
The next "Q" is what are these cysts ? As we await the results...

I do relate to the choking feeling in your throat. I also feel presure and an odd sort of a sore throat down in the area of the Thyroid and Para-thyroids. The sore throat ~ I'd almost say it's like it's bruised more than a sore throat as it's known...
I'd like to hear what the results are so do keep an update.

The RAI uptake is elevated after the period of thyroid iflammation [thyroiditis]which is suggestive by the ultrasound.
Hope you got your TPO/TG /TSI antibodies tested.
however about 105 of people tested can have "normal" antibodies levels and still have autoimmune condition.
    The biopsy of thyroid tissue can show lymphocytes in case of Hashimitos thyroiditis;
most doctors would not offer treatment with normal labs.

Re: Enlarged Thyroid with Cysts with normal bloodwork

My Endo ordered more bloodwork, but they all came back normal....
    Free Thyroxin .89
    Sensitive TSH .87
    Anti-Thyroid Microsomal AB 0.4
    Thyroglobulin AB <1.8
    Thyroid Stimulating Imm. <1.0

I am still waiting to hear back from the Endo to see what happens next. I am fine with not being treated with meds or anything else, I would just like to know why I have cysts on my thyroid and if I should be worried about them.

Should or would the Dr do a biopsy on my thyroid when the cysts only measure 5 mm?

Your Endo is using old school Hashimoto's antibody testing. the AMA is 20 years out of date. You need to get him to run the TPOAb. It is more accurate.

Re: Enlarged Thyroid with Cysts with normal bloodwork

I don't think I have Hashimotos anyway. My Endo thought I did, but why would I have that when I don't have any symptoms? I think my Dr thought I had this because I told him I was constipated (which I was at the time) and I told him that my feet are always cold (but I have had that all my life).
I am losing weight, although I can explain that. I am not eating well because, everything I put in my stomach upsets it and I won't feel good for hours, so I don't eat much. I also fence 2-3 times a week and ride an exercise bike at least 2-3 times a week as well. I am tired all the time, but I blame that on not sleeping well. I go back and forth between being constipated and having diarrhea. I just don't seem to have any REAL symptoms of having any disease thyroid related. If anything, it has helped in some ways! I have had irregular cycles my whole life (like every 6 months I have a cycle). Now, I have had about 5 cycles in a row right on schedule! I also have emotions that I have never had to deal with before! (Ok, that may not be a blessing, but at least I can relate to most women out there now! : )
So, all in all, I truly don't believe that I have Hashimotos or Graves. My symptoms (if I have any at all) can mostly be explained. The only unexplainable "symptom" is that I don't feel good most days because of my stomach doing flip flops when I eat. Who knows, that may not even be related to my thyroid.
I also had another choking/swallowing attack today, but it didn't last long. I don't understand why that comes and goes. The only thing I can think of is that my thyroid is enlarging and then shrinking suddenly for whatever reason.

Re: Enlarged Thyroid with Cysts with normal bloodwork

Funny you should ask this...I got a call from my Endo today in regards to follow up and my choking/catch in my throat. He is sending me to an ENT Dr and wants me to have a Esophageal done on Monday. After I see the ENT, he wants me to call him back with what the ENT had to say, and then wants to schedule me to have an upper endoscopy done. WHAT IN THE WORLD! I feel like everything is happening so fast....which is great, but do I really need all this done? I am going to do what they ask because my mom died of stomach cancer when she was 33. I am going to be 32 next month and I suppose something could be happening, but I doubt it. She had such a rare form and they tell me that it is not generally hereditary, but you never know.

No; the biopsy is done out of the gland tissue not the cyst in case of doubtful case
