    Dr. says I'm 'subclinical hypothyroid'

My TSH has been as high as 5 recently. The doctor wanted me on 25 mcg of synthroid. I got a 2nd opinion. This doctor did a thyroid ultrasound and blood tests. He says there was nothing suspicious on the ultrasound. My TSH came out 4.43, with free T3 of 3.1 and free T4 of 0.99, which he says is normal. He also wants to put me on 25 mcg of synthroid even though I have no symptoms of hypothyroidism at all. I talked him into waiting 3 months and do a blood test again, during which time I'm going to try to lose 10 pounds or so which he says might help.

I'm 52, 5'11 and 220 lbs. I'm on Benicar and Dynacirc high blood pressure (BP was 106/68 today and 110/70 2 weeks ago) and also Strattera for ADD and Protonix for high stomach acid. I'm also a 4-year survivor of prostate cancer.

Is there any reason that I would need the synthroid with no symptoms? Is there any damage risk to organs or other body parts if thyroid level is low? He didn't mention any.

Any help, answers and info is very welcome. Thanks in advance....

Subclinical hypothyroidism may be a risk factor for heart disease, especially if your lipids are abnormal. There have been several studies showing that low dose T4, in the 25-50mcg range, has improved lipid values.

And yeah, get the antibodies tested. If they are high, it's Hashi's.
