Hashi's and Vitiligo?

Earlier this year I was diagnosed with Hypo thyroid. My antibodie levels were normal. I am 32. My 6 year old daughter started to show an elevated TSH on her blood work. We had the doctor check her TPO and it was pretty high. So she has Hashimotos. The other wierd thing is that we both have patche's of skin that have lost there pigment (Vitiligo). I never noticed mine until last year, and it is starting to spread alot. My daughter has had a patch on her neck since she was 2 or 3. My concern is that both Hashi's and Vitiligo are Autoimune problems. I am scared that my daughter could have some other autoimmune issues. Her doctor doesn't really want to dig into that, he just wants to start her on synthroid. I can't get her in with an endo until March. Any suggestions? Also do any of you who have Thyroid problems have the Vitiligo as well?

I've had "vertilgo" most of my adult life, started on my neck, go figure. Now I have it on my arms, legs, chest. From the looks of my thyroid, I've had this for a long time. So, yes, vertiligo goes hand and hand with hashi's. Glad you caught your daughters' early on!!

I was diagnosed with a pigment problem but I cant remember the name. It was on my back and their were super white patches all over when I'm more of a light olive color. He gave me a topical ointment to take care of it. It occurred mostly when I was in the sun alot. I am also Hashis.

Re: Hashi's and Vitiligo?

Well I worry that with my daughter it may not really be Vitiligo, but it seems that it is pretty hard to tell the difference between these skin pigment issues. The Dermitologist thought it was Vitiligo, but I am not so sure. A co worker of my wifes told her last night that when she was 8 the doctor told her she had Hashimoto's. Her mom took her to see a specialist in a bigger city who told her that her condition was triggered by a virus or infection. He put her on IV antibiotics and suplemented her diet with some vitamin she couldn't remember. She said after that she has never had another issue with it. She is 38 now. I really don't want to start my daughter on the Synthroid just yet.

Re: Hashi's and Vitiligo?

I have had vitiligo for as long as I can remember (I am now 50), mostly on my hands and legs. I also have hypothyroid/hashi's. My oldest daughter has vitiligo (she is 24)and I was told by my endo that she should be watched for thyroid issues, but so far she has none. I also have an autoimmune blood disorder that I didn't develop until my 20's. Autoimmune disorders do go hand in hand but just because your daughter has vitiligo and hashi's doesn't mean she will necessarily develop more. Viruses and infections can trigger autoimmune issues-so can allergic reactions. If the white patches are smooth just like skin, but with no pigment and do not go away, they most likely are vitiligo.

Good luck!
