Unless you've been tested and proved iodine deficient, you probably shouldn't be supplementing it. For one thing, most people aren't deficient at all. Reason 2 not to supplement - Most hypothyroidism is caused by Hashimoto's disease. Most Hashi's patients who take additional iodine are made to feel worse from it, because the damaged gland can't make use of the added iodine. Reason 3 - The need for iodine depends on the levels of the other "-ines" in your system... fluorine, bromine, etc. They all balance each other, so too much of one or the other causes problems.

My suggestion is to forget supplementing iodine. It isn't likely to help your thyroid problem. You didn't say, but hopefully, you're in treatment with prescription thyroid medicine?

It depends on whether or not you have autoimmune thyroid disease with postive TPO antibodies. People with TPOs tend to not be able to tolerate adding any iodine to their diet because it will exacerbate their symptoms.

I take an iodine suppliment, Iodoral which contains 5mg of iodine and is considered a high potency dose. I don't have TPO antibodies so I tolerate if just fine.

If you find iodine causes problems I would cut back on the dose you are taking until these issues resolve.
