Can someone explain this to me...I'm confused

I've been reading about how low ferritin can cause conversion issues with T4 and T3, but I thought your FT4 would be higher than your FT3 if you had a problem with conversion. I have low ferritin and my FT4 is much lower than my FT3, so how could I be having trouble converting T4 to T3 if I have more T3 than T4?

Yes, low ferritin will affect the conversion of T4 to T3 but also will affect the binding of active T3 and many other metabolic functions. Without iron metabolic activity will slow and hormone replacement will be ineffective.

The reason you have higher T3 is probably because you are taking desiccated thyroid which contains T3. T3 therapy can suppress T4 levels as well and it's also possible that your T4 is converting to RT3.

Thanks. I'm going to call my dr. on Tuesday and ask him. I asked for this test, not him. He may not even know why I asked for it and since it's in range, he may think it's fine.

Make sure they run an FT3 along with the RT3, it's the ratio between the two that's important, not just whether or not it's in range. Good luck!

He always runs an FT3, but I don't think he even knows about RT3. The one time I asked for that test, the doc let me get it, but never even talked about it. What's frustrating is finding all this great advice about labs and info, but it's very hard to find a doc who even understands or believes it enough to test you or talk about it.
