Is niacin good or bad for thyroid?

I'm starting to take an iron supplement and many contain things like C, copper, folic acid, B12 and niacin. I've read some articles saying niacin is necessary for thyroid function and some say it suppresses your thyroid and can cause liver damage. The supplement I have now has 20mg. Is that too much or should I not take any niacin at all?

Re: Is niacin good or bad for thyroid?

I take 500 mg. flush Niacin to keep my HDL cholesterol up. I know many people who take much more than this - 1200 to 1500 mg. I have had absolutely no problems but it is a good idea to have the liver tested during your 6 month lab work. Most docs do this anyway as part of the lab profile.

Re: Is niacin good or bad for thyroid?

After I started taking Niaspan to raise HDL, I noticed something about me changed. I felt like I no longer could get any anxiety, which was kind of weird, since I am not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Anyways, after getting my blood work, the doctor noticed that my thyroid was not kicking out like it should and gave me some med to take to increase it. After having this expereince, it made me see the power of the thyroid on the human mind (at least in my case)...Like when my thyroid was lower, I didn't notice any major energy differences, but was never really got excited about doing anything...Then when I stop taking niacin for a while, my thyroid levels go up and the excitement comes back along with some anxiety.
