can acne be a side effect of hypo?

I have been looking up information on thyroid disorders because my derm called me tonight to tell me to get into a specialist, specifically about a thyroid and some other result on a blood test.

I have been getting treated for bad acne and body breakouts and I told him last visit about my severe fatigue, depression, and weight gain.

Anyways looking back I wish I would have gotten checked totally but in the beginning it was the breakouts and slowed healing, then weight gain than worse and worse fatigue to where im at now, so im wondering if thats some common side effect?

Hi Leroy. Actually, acne IS one of the side effects of being hypothyroid. As many of the women on this board can attest, hormones definitely affect the skin (hence the term "period pimples.") I notice that my skin has less breakouts when I'm not hypo.

I have MORE breakouts when inadequately treated for hypothyroidism. I have none if I get enough thyroid. I think it is because thyrid balances the other hormones.

I agree that breakouts can be related to being hypo. Hormones affect the skin and hair. That is why a good dermatologist should run a thyroid test if you are having problems with either. I would get the thyroid regulated and consider adding essential fatty acids to your vitamin regimen. Good luck.
