Diagnosed Hypo - should I check for Hashimoto's?

Having been diagnosed as Hypo here in the UK, I've started medication and I got blood tested for TSH and T4.

Is it worth asking the doctor at my next blood tests (in 2.5 weeks) to test also for antibodies to check for Hashimoto's?

Would my treatment (levothyroxine) change at all if I had Hashimotos?

Re: Diagnosed Hypo - should I check for Hashimoto's?

It doesn't hurt to get tested for Hashi's, the most common cause of hypothyroidism. Now, the antibody test does not definitively confirm Hashi's but, a result in the thousands is an indication of Hashi's.

Knowing you have Hashi's means that you can expect your thyroid function to diminish over time. And, there might be some times that, as the thyroid dies off from the antibody attack, that it "throws off" thyroid hormones which could cause hyper symptoms (and levels).

Whether your hypothyroidism is caused by Hashi's or not does not change the treatment which, in your case, is levothyroxine.
