Post Hyperthyroid but overweight?

I just recently had all my thyroid levels drawn and they show Hyperthyroid with my tsh at .008,my ft3 9.59 and ft4 2.8. The only reason I went to the Dr was because a doctor at the hospitali work at looked at me and asked "Do you have Graves disease? You better get that checked before your eyes pop out of your head" Insulting, yes, but it got me thinking. I had been having eye trouble and I have a new bulging eye look over this past year. Thing is, I havent lost weight,in fact Ive had trouble losing weight. I'm scared to death theyre going to put me on some med that will slow everything down and Ill gain more weight.
Anyone else HYPER but dont have the losing weight symptom?

Re: Hyperthyroid but overweight?

Sorry for the reason you're here but, glad you found us.

While weight loss is more common with hyperthyroidism, it's not uncommon for people to gain weight - probably due to increased appetite.

Please know that you don't have to worry about gaining weight as long as your doctor medicates you properly.

Unfortunately, not all doctors know how to medicate properly for thyroid disease so, if you keep in touch on here along the way, we can show you how to interpret your labs so you can work with your doctor to adjust your dose appropriately.

Please know that the right way to medicate for Graves'/hyperthyroidism is to take the lowest possible dose that will maintain the FreeT4 level in the upper half of the range, regardless of TSH.

You'll also want to make sure that you get labs every 4-6 wks. max since we can heal that quickly.

Have you started treatment?
